Okay, I have a problem. And it’s somewhat major in my eyes.
Last week John and I decided it was time to upgrade our computer. We enlisted a coworker of John’s, Steve, who builds computers for the giant corporation they both work for. I know Steve and like him. The deal was good, the money not too much, the upgrade went fine. Gave him the computer on Thursday, actually had it back on Friday. Shiny new hard drive, motherboard, etc.
The only problem is that...on my old computer I used a program called Adaptec Easy CD Creator 4.0 to make data, music, and photo CD’s. As with most programs, I’m guessing, when you were finished writing to a CD you “closed” the CD. I have three CD’s I didn’t close before we upgraded. And now I can’t access them at all.
This may not sound like a big deal, but on these three disks are every single story I’ve ever typed up and all of the photos of Julia I’ve taken since she was born, including everything from in the hospital, her first Christmas, her first birthday, etc.
Because the sessions weren’t closed, my new shiny computer doesn’t read the disks. According to the computer, there is nothing ON these disks.
Before, we ran Windows ME and with the upgrade Steve gave us Windows XP Professional, which I didn’t like before I found out we were getting it. Windows XP and Adaptec Easy CD Creator are not compatible. There are driver upgrades and software upgrades available on the website, but because my 4.0 program came with the Pavilion computer we originally had, I can’t access them. You need codes and such that would have come with the software package had you actually bought it in a store, and since I didn’t buy it, since it came with my old computer, I don’t have any of that stuff.
Through illegal sources I downloaded Easy CD Creator 5.0 Deluxe only to discover that it, for some reason, will not read the CD’s either. It still shows them as blank when I know for a fact that they’re not.
I don’t know where else to turn. I have tried to use the website www.roxio.com for support (Roxio bought out Adaptec) and it’s pretty much useless. To call their support line is $35.00 and doesn’t guarantee a solution to your problem.
All I need to do is figure out how to close the sessions on these disks and then I don’t care if I ever see Adaptec Easy CD Creator 4.0 again in my life.
Does anyone have a suggestion for me?
My other hope is that maybe I can find someone who owns a copy of Windows 98, ME, NT, 2000, whatever. Adaptec IS compatible with them and if I could switch back to anything but XP and get Adaptec working again, just to close the CD’s, I would be one happy girl.
