Blow the trumpets. Let loose the streamers. Put out the banners.

We, the Slashers, have been

For so long we have remained hidden in the depths of internet obscurity. We have kept the love alive through our works of art, be they written, drawn, manniped or welded together. We are the Slashers, the unsung fans of so many fandoms, lovingly, thoroughly supporting our beloved tv shows, movies and books. We have taken the characters into our hearts, seen them worthy of our attention and our imaginations, and immortalised them in slashy ways.

But for so long we have kept our secret passion, our love of hot men (and women) doing naughty things to each other to pages on the internet. The rest of the world knows little of our existence and so often we have preferred it that way. They just do not understand our infatuation, our need to Slash these characters, our addiction, and we have been afraid to speak out, for fear of retribution. As lovers of all things gay we do understand that this is still not a tolerant world, still not a safe place for homosexuality. We may not be gay ourselves, but we are still just as easily targets for bigotry.

The time is now upon us where many of our beloved shows are beginning to recognise just how dedicated we are, just how strongly we stand by and support them. That we are an important fanbase. I know, for example, the writers of Stargate have acknowledged us before, by putting in little snippets of moments between characters, just for us. Just to give us more fuel, more ammunition for our stories. And of course just so we can squee to our heart's content! (Admit it, you know you do!)

And then in season 4 of Supernatural a magic moment happened. A moment that will go down in history for us. The word "Slash" was spoken. We, the fanatical Slashers, were mentioned in passing between the two main characters (for those of you who don't know that's Sam and Dean - and if you don't know you really need to check these two out!!), who wondered if we realised they were brothers. And the answer is of course, yes, yes we do (And we don't care!). Watching that episode I squeed and clapped and rewound and rewatched and squeed some more. The acknowledgement of SLASH! OMG! As a proud member of the community of Slashers I just couldn't believe it!

And now, a new moment, a new recognition of Slashers. To the writers of Supernatural, I salute and adore you! I feel so honoured. Supernatural actually had a Slash character in the first episode of season 5!! The scene cuts to a young woman at her computer, writing a story about Sam and Dean doing naughty things to each other (that are just oh so right). Not a great story, I admit, and in a way I feel a little put out that our moment of recognition included a bad Slash writer! (The world needs to see that there are some fantastic, publish-worthy writers in Slash world... you know, if the characters weren't copywrited or anything!) The woman is contacted and asked to pass on a message to Sam and Dean. Her meeting of them is at the same time both cringe-worthy and so bloody spot on! I hate to think I'd act that flabbergasted and stunned and squee-ey should I meet my Slash heroes in person. But who am I kidding?! I SO totally would! But one is then led to wonder...is that really the image we want portrayed to the world?!

However, either way, I feel that this is a great moment for Slashers everywhere. We are being acknowledged and recognised, and our importance in keeping these shows going and as a measure of the popularity of tv shows, movies and books is being noted. Many people watching that episode will not have a clue what was going on and I personally feel sorry for them. My life has been all the richer for having Slash as part of it. One of my friends who saw the episode, a non Slash person (someone who had never heard of Slash until I came along and dropped a few comments) even commented on the moment. She has no idea of the depth of my love for Slash or really that I even write and read it, but even she knew that this was a moment for the fans

Slashaholics Rejoice!
