futuristic imprisonment
our freedom is slowing slipping away from us, and its thanks to technology..
i was watching 'a current affair' tonight, and they had this story on parking fines, and how theres a new little device that has a laser thats set off when u drive over it. this sets off a timer, and if ur car is still there over 15 mins, or however long the allocated time for parking is for, it sends a signal to the ranger guy, who comes and gives u a ticket, even if ur only 30 seconds over the time limit.
and it got me thinking. maybe we're really not that far away from the likes of gattaca after all. this parking device is just an example of how we seem to be striving for perfection, and ultimate structure. in and out, no problems, so manual and unhuman. so what if we're a couple of mins over the time limit coz we got held up in the post office. now we should drop everything and move the car so we dont get a 35 dollar fine?
and if we dare to rebel, and avoid this little device, we get punished further with a larger fine. negative reinforcement- slowly training us like lab rats to do the right thing.
ok yes, exaggerating a little, but whats to come? the more we improve, create and develop technology, the more we're dehumanising ourselves. we rely on machines too much (and yes i say this very hypocritically) and when they fail, we become lost.
and thanks to technology, we have created a lurking monster thats ready to jump out. we have decreased significance of death, by creating weapons of mass destruction, like bombs and biological warfare. we created a mess by doing so, because battle, war has become so much more destructive. killing innocence, like women and children, who want nothing more then peace, like the rest of us. the rate the world is battling, we will have blown the earth into oblivion. its no long just about survival, but about who wants to be the dominant country, who must have all the power. and this means that superpowers will rise above the ash and take control, so that our freedom. our thoughts will be manipulated.
and wats worse. whilst we are creating a world that could someday resemble that of v for vendetta and gattaca, where if ur not with the superpowers, ur hunted down so u cant rebel, we are also destroying the beautiful earth with the production residue, of toxic waste and fumes. we're turning the planet into a waste land.
for the most intelligent species on earth, we certainly do some really stupid stuff.
