Mitchell wasn’t quite sure how he ended up in a pub with Jacob, but there they were as if they were old friends having a chat.

“Why did you save me?” Mitchell asked, gripping his glass tightly.

“Like I said, special case.”

The dark haired man scoffed. “That’s it? I’m just your little experiment?”

Jacob took a sip from his pint. “Well, that’s only part of it.”

“Part of it? Part of what?” Mitchell felt offended in a variety of ways.

“Tell me,” Jacob put down his beer. “Why a hospital porter?”

Mitchell disliked the change in subject and thought about clamming up, but found himself answering the doctor’s question.

“No one notices a hospital porter. It’s low-key, out of the sun…I’m just trying to live a normal life.”

This time, to Mitchell’s surprise, the hunter didn’t reply or laugh cynically. Instead, Jacob looked distant.

“Mm,” he started softly. “But that just can’t happen, can it?”

“You can try,” the vampire stated and he saw the doctor’s eyes flicker.

Jacob shook his head solemnly. “You’ve said that to me before, but I’m not so sure.”

Mitchell sat back, peeved, and crossed his arms. “Yeah? Well, guess what. It’s been a good-“

“I wasn’t referring to you,” Jacob interrupted and he looked visibly hurt.

For the first time since Mitchell had approached the doctor in the office, the vampire actually felt pity for Jacob, but then he remembered what the man was.

Feeling fed up, Mitchell shook his head and got up, putting his coat on. Jacob continued to stare into his drink and Mitchell found himself conflicted.

The dark haired man to a step before placing a comforting had on the doctor’s arm. “You watch yourself too, Dr. Gordon. If any of the other vampires find out about you…”

Dr. Gordon gave a small smile. “Call me Jacob.”

“Jacob,” Mitchell repeated back and felt a shiver run through his body. Trying his best to ignore it, Mitchell gave Jacob a nod before heading out of the pub and back to his flat.

After the incident in the alleyway, it was if someone had flipped a switch. Mitchell no longer forced himself to avoid Jacob and the hunter left Mitchell alone, only giving a small smile on the occasion when they did pass by each other. The dark haired man wondered if some vulnerability had been revealed that night that lead to the change in both himself and Jacob.

It was another late evening and Mitchell was just finishing up his shift. As he headed towards the changing room, a hand on his shoulder stopped him. The vampire turned and saw Jacob.

“Hey,” the doctor said softly. “I was wondering if I could ask you a question.”

Mitchell raised his eyebrows, but said nothing.

Jacob nervously shifted under Mitchell’s gaze. “Why haven’t you made a move to get rid of me?”

“You’re-” Mitchell stopped to think. “I’m not a killer anymore and you’re the least of my worries right now,” he tried to say as nicely as possible.

“Herrick,” Jacob said and nodded.

Mitchell tried to hide his surprise, but the hunter saw the look in Mitchell’s eyes.

“He’s the one we’re really after,” Jacob began to explain. “We’ve figured that if we can eliminate him, it’ll be easier to take care of the other vampires.”

“Take care of?” Mitchell bit.

The blond haired man crossed his arms. “If there are ones like you, we won’t kill them just yet. Only those that can’t be controlled.”

Mitchell let out an angry breath and gave Jacob a cold stare before marching to the changing room.

Jacob gazed at Mitchell’s figure and then headed in his own direction, shaking his head.
