the darkness

this is a short story that i am making into a film. eventually!
It contains horror themes.

I reached into my pocket and deposited the key, yanking once hard on the padlock to make sure it was secure and stepping back just as he arrived at the now locked door. He reached his blood soaked hands through the bars his fingers straining to grab me.

“Sarah Unlock this door!” he demanded. A smile crossed my lips.

“How can you do this?” he screamed. His terror filled eyes continually turning to glance behind him.

A sickly wet sound approached from the darkness behind him. He spun but could see nothing. Turning back he continued to plead with me to open the door.

“It’s coming!  For the love of God Sarah please don’t let it get me!” he pleaded. I leaned toward the bars our faces so close I could smell his breath.

“I will let you out Dean. On one condition.”

Relief crossed his face the thought of freedom lighting a glimmer of hope in his eyes.

“What condition? What is it? I will do anything!” he hoped. My smile grew bigger for a moment and I whispered

“Bring my brother back!”  The glimmer of hope died as he realised what I asked was impossible.

Dean had stabbed Michael in the back and left him bloody and wounded for the creature to delay it and make good his escape. He thought they had been alone but I had found Michael during my mad flight from the creature through the tunnels. He told me what dean had done.

“You bitch!” Dean raged clawing at me through the bars but I had stepped back out of reach.

Five of us had entered the tunnels. Myself, Dean, my brother Michael, Dean’s girlfriend Amy and My boyfriend Thomas.  We were just a bunch of teens looking for something fun to do on a Saturday night. Thomas had stolen the keys to the sewer gate from his father and we had set up a little party in one of the pumping stations. When the Alcohol had run out it had been Thomas and dean’s idea to go further into the tunnels.

When we found the old living quarters we had been excited. But that didn’t last long. Somewhere in those old abandoned tunnels lived evil incarnate. Some kind of black amorphous creature that must have lived off the rats until we disturbed its dark existence.

It killed Amy first. It lurched out of the blackness its white teeth gleaming in light of Thomas’s torch. Thomas tried to fight it of and free Amy from its blood frothed mouth.  That’s when it showed its claws. Thomas fell next. The three of us ran in different directions aimlessly through the blackness lost and deafened by the sickly noises that echoed down the tunnel.

That was when I got separated. Michael begged dean to go back and look for me. But dean refused. Michael suggested “If it comes we will out run it” and that’s when Dean stabbed him “I don’t have to out run it. I just have to out run you!”

Luckily for me Dean’s sense of direction was bad and I had reached the gate first.  And now I turned and walked toward the light of the exit crying as the creature and Dean’s cries mingled into the one horrible sound.
