Sunday was a laid-back day. The weather wasn't too great but Marcia and I went to the beach anyway. The Ipanema beach (the nicest of the Rio beaches), is just two blocks away.

My first purchase and an absolute must for any (temporary) carioca (inhabitant of Rio): Havaianas.

An army of people selling a wide variety of food, drinks, jewelry, sunscreen, clothes and blankets make sure you have everything you need while you're on the beach. I've been trying to make my "Noa, obrigado" sound as flawless as possible so I don't sound like a tourist. When they know you're a tourist they insist a little longer, but never get pushy or unfriendly in any way. Anyway, Marcia thought I should try the Globo snacks as they are pretty typical. They look (and taste) like styrofoam donuts.

After a sudden tidal wave had soaked us to the bone, we called it a day and spent the rest of the afternoon chilling at the apartment, watching movies.

At night, we all went out for drinks and met Seth (an American who's moving to Rio) and his friend Valentina.

I'd be seeing a lot more of both of them as Marcia offered Seth to exchange his hostel bed for a matrass on the floor, next to mine. An offer he gladly accepted.
