Upcoming Movies I Want to See and Etc.

May 23, 2008 19:03

I know I have to update legitimately but until then I want to share (and remember) the movies that I want to see that may or may not be out right now.

Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull (Out Now): I just really hope it’s as good as the original 1st and 3rd.

Forbidden Kingdom (Out Now): I like Jackie Chan so much and who wouldn’t want to see a movie with both Jackie Chan and Jet Li in it?

Get Smart (June 20th 2008): I know I really should see the TV series first but oh well! This looks great and reminds me of Johnny English.

Mamma Mia! (July 18th 2008): I’d like to see with my Mom because she likes the musical so much.

Tinkerbell (Fall 2008): Who knows when this is finally going to be out. It seems like Disney has been teasing the public for years now. The series started with Gail Carson Levine's Fairy Dust and the Quest for the Egg followed by the sequel Fairy Haven and the Quest for the Wand. There are also several learning-to-read books that fall into the series. Plus, Disney has been placing Pixie Hollow video clips on their channel. They really just need to release the movie. There are also other Tinkerbell movies to follow: North of Neverland (which is a book in the learning-to-read series), A Midsummer's Storm, and A Winter Story.

I have mixed feelings about the whole fairy thing. On one hand, it's exciting to see Disney develop the world in which Tinkerbell lives, showing the public more fairies and their way of life. But I can't help but think that much of it is just a scheme to develop another franchise. Everyone knows how huge The Princess Collection is and how much huger is is now that Disney made a big deal about the anniversary of it, gave them all gold dresses, etc. Fairies is a natural follow-up. That said, I do enjoy the books out about Pixie Hollow. Gail Carson Levine is one of my favorite authors and I'm glad they asked her to write the two books she did. The learning-to read series is also very cute, has good lessons in it, and beautiful illustrations.

In case anyone is wondering I thought I would include the titles of the book series:

Fairy Dust and the Quest for the Egg by Gail Carson Levine
Fairy Haven and the Quest for the Wand by Gail Carson Levine

The Easy Readers
The Trouble with Tink
Vidia and the Fairy Crown (my favorite in the Easy Readers)
Lily's Pesky Plant
Beck and the Great Berry Battle
Rani in the Mermaid Lagoon
Fira and the Full Moon
A Masterpiece for Bess (my second favorite in the Easy Readers)
Prilla and the Butterfly Lie
Tink, North of Neverland
Beck, Beyond the Sea
Dulcie's Taste of Magic
Silvermist and the Ladybug Curse
Fawn and the Mysterious Trickster

Anyways...back to movies!

City of Ember (Oct. 2008): The book by Jeanne DuPrau is fantastic so I can’t wait to see what they do with the movie. Incidentally, the next book out in the “Ember” series is coming out this August (The Diamond of Darkholm), in case you were wondering.

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince (Nov. 21st 2008): WOOOOHOOOOOOO!

X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009): Yay!

Magneto (2009): I have hope that it will be good despite four X-Men movies being made before it.

Tintin (2009): This could be really great. Dreamworks is making it and what's not to like about Snowy? Also, it’s directed by Steven Spielberg.

Spider-Man 4 (2009): I haven't seen the third one but if that one isn't terrible I'd go see the fourth one.

The White Giraffe (2009): Based on a book that currently has a place of prominence in the bookstore I work in. That's enough to make me intrigued.

Alice in Wonderland (March 2010): Tim Burton is going to be involved. Once again, I'm always up for postmodern interpretations...OK that's not quite true. I'm rather obsessed with postmodern interpretations, particularly those involving old folk and fairy tales, Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland, and even some Shakespeare.

How to Train Your Dragon (March 2010): Based on Cressida Cowell's series. This is another one of those books I've been meaning to read for years.

Oz (2010): I'm always interested in postmodernist interpretations of classics, particularly ones that I loved in my childhood.

Guardians of Ga'Hoole (2010): Based on Katherine Lasky's books series, this movie will hopefully revive the books in the public's eye. I haven't read the books but they seem nice enough and I've been meaning to for years now.

Sherlock Holmes (2010): I am cautiously looking forward to this. There are certain canons that I am snooty about and this is one of them. I love the original Sherlock Holmes so much that I would want to see justice done to it. I have no problems with retellings or borrowings of characters from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s wonderful world…I’m just picky about what ones I like. For good or bad, if I am not pleased with a portrayal of a character from the Holmesian world I will judge like no tomorrow!
That being said I think there are at least two series out there that do justice to Doyle’s work (although I doubt that the author himself would have liked them). These are the Mary Russell series by Laurie King and the Enola Holmes series by Nancy Springer. Anyway, moving on…

Rapunzel (2010): If you have known me for at least a month you probably have heard my spiel on Disney, how the 2000s haven't been the best movie-wise, when I was your age we had good movies like Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, blah, blah, blah. You have also probably heard me expressing my cautious optimistic belief that 2009/10 is going to be an amazing year as regards Disney movies. They are going back to fairy tales! YAY! Retellings of Rapunzel and the Frog Princess are due for 2009 and I'm hoping for wonderful, wonderful things because:
a) The animation for Rapunzel is based on this painting: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Fragonard%2C_The_Swing.jpg
b) I trust the directors.
c) Tiana, the protaganist of the Frog Princess, is the first Disney African American princess. The film is set in New Orleans and I think it has a lot of potential.

In fact, I think that Disney has a good amount of movies coming out that sound great:
Dec. 25 2008: Bedtime Stories
2009: Prince of Persia: Sands of Time
Dec. 25 2009: The Princess and the Frog
Christmas 2010: Rapunzel

Amulet (2010): This is based on a graphic novel which, amazingly enough, I have read. I wasn't that impressed by the book, but then I'm starting to doubt that much of anything happens in the first volume of a graphic novel (Nausicaa excepted).

Shrek Goes Fourth (2010): Need I say more?

Puss in Boots (2010): Should be interesting to see how the studio releases the fourth Shrek and this movie as they are both slotted for 2010 but who knows? A lot can happen in two years.

The Hobbit (2010): Clearly.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (pt. 1): Of course.

The Hobbit 2 (2011): Also clearly.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (pt. 2): Also of course

Larklight (?): Based on a book by Philip Reeve that I very much want to read.

Iron Man II ( ? ): The first one was great so I'm hoping the second one will be too
