there was a period in my childhood when i said that my favorite color was green, before i turned my fickle heart to red, and much later, purple.
I never remember actually liking green that much. i remember wondering why it was my favorite color.
i think i just said it because, as a child, you are expected to have a favorite color. it is one of the 5 questions you get asked, along with age, what you want to be when you grow up, favorite subject in school and... probably another one. throughout ones life, there are sets of questions like these, for which you must have answers. they are the defining characteristics that make you who you are to the vast majority of people for whom you are wallpaper in their life. small talk questions.
if you do not have an answer, then they ask again in a different way, or state with incredulity, surely you have a favorite color! everyone has a favorite color! you either deliver the goods, or they put you in the special class. so you pick green. keep the grown ups happy so theyll leave you alone.
