Your bug may simply have a blown fuse, or worst case a broken stalk, neither of which is difficult I suppose it doesn't matter if it's int he shop already.

Truck-wise, you should buy a 6-pack, or 12 pack, and have some people over to take a look at it. If you'd like you're welcome to bring it up to my place as well. I can't promise much help, but I could provide a clean garage floor and a lot of lighting, to make it easier to slide underneath and get a good idea of what's going on. Perhaps you'd get a better idea of what's up and a better idea of what costs you're facing.

I'd agree that they may both be no big deal. A coolant leak is generally a connection or a whole hose, neither of which is a big deal. A bit of a pain to collect and refill antifreeze, but conceptually it's a piece of cake. Ditto for the power steering fluid, the system itself is very small and any part within it is just no big deal for cost or the effort to replace. I truly doubt a trustworthy shop would cost you 1/4 of what you're thinking.

If you're looking for a good place for repairs, there's one a few blocks from where I live. It's a one-man shop, run by the best friend of a long-time co-worker of mine. He's one of those "good guy" mechanics that does what needs to be done and nothing more.

I dunno, if you want to save some money then you must fix what you have. If you think a new truck would be really cool, then give in right away and just go for it. You can't cost justify a new one though ;) We aren't falling for it.
