At the moment, I am thankful for the fan blowing a breeze near the
computer, and I have a view of one of the many paddocks here. Yep, I
bet you all guessed - I am in Western Australia, at my parent's place.
The plane trip over on Christmas Day was an event in itself, and I
remember thinking at numerous times during the journey that I really
should take a sedative when flying in an aeroplane. I found myself very
very nervous about being kilometres up in the air, and my nephew
playing near the emergency exit.
Perth domestic airport reminds me of Hobart domestic airport, in that
the carpark is not multi-level, and consists of what could be your
ordinary shopping centre carpark. At least Perth airport building has a
few levels to it, and they don't make you walk down stairs onto the
tarmac. When I saw my parents, it was an emotional occasion,
considering I hadn't seen my dad since September. Finally organising
Mel, Axel, Joshua (5), Beck, Jasmine (1), luggage and hire car, and we
were off to Spencers Brook Rd, where the Ellel WA base is. This took
about an hour and twenty minutes, and I slept most of the way. The
difference between Perth and Sydney in enormous. One, Sydney is
infinately better. Secondly, travelling an hour out of the centre of
Sydney will get you - well, still in Sydney's outer suburbs. Travelling
twenty minutes out of Perth, well you're in the outback. Red dirt,
intense heat, kangaroos, everything.
Northam is the closest town to here, and its this amazingly flat town,
with red dirt footpaths, every car with a fine film of red dirt, and
every second building is a pub. There is a cinema, which I visited last
night. The movie started a half hour after the scheduled time, and you
could actually see the edge of the film on the screen because they
can't hold the projecter straight. Thats what phone books are for! :-)
Ellel base, has a massive sign out the front declaring its presence,
and aim of helping everyone know god, in the middle of absolutely
nowhere. There are five houses, one of which my parents live in, an
office, a recreation hall, lots of dorms, and a mess hall. It kinda
reminds me of one of those places especially set up for school camps?
Anyway, apparently it used to be a US Navy Base when they had ships at
Freemantle during some war. A bit of trivia that seems to be repeated a
lot.
I helped feed the animals today, which consist of domesticated
kangaroos, a very whiny donkey and a slightly un-nerving emu. I am
lucky enough to have my own little cabin, complete with air
conditioning, a small kitchen and glorious queen bed, that I take
pleasure in sleeping right in the middle of.
This week's activities have taken us to Toojay and York (similar towns
to Northam), the Harbourtown shopping centre in Perth (where much
bargains were found, and many clothes purchased) and Freemantle. At the
moment, Freemantle has been my favourite place. Its a very pretty
little town, with lots of trendy shops and cafe's. This week I have
tried my best to relax, and soak up the many many many stars at night,
adjust to the three hour time difference, and cope with the children.
Its good being an auntie in many ways - I can give them back when they
get to annoying!
I am looking forward to returning to Sydney, although its always nice
to spend time with family. I think I actually enjoy being busy now, as
much as I savour peace and quiet, the whole busy routine thing is
definately growing on me.
