Well, yesterday was WonderCon and my birthday and I had a great time. We went to some panels and just kind of wandered around, taking it all in.

The Psychology of Batman panel in a nutshell:

I missed the first few minutes, but the Psychology of Batman panel was pretty cool. It was done by this professor from Henderson State University. He talked about how there are so many different versions of Batman depending on who's creating the story that before you can even approach the topic, you have to ask "Wait, which Batman am I talking about?" and the things that are always constant about the character (his parents are dead!!, etc..). He talked a bit about Freud (how the prominence of the mother's pearls in death sequences may have Oedipal allusions) and Jung. Then he went into common tropes about the character or reoccurent literary themes (the orphan child, post-traumatic stress, survivor's guilt, trickster characters, oracles, the shadow self). He also briefly touched on the Batman/Robin subtext (but I think that could be it's own panel, hehe). But ultimately, the psychology of Batman depends on each individual reader and what they want/need to see in the character. And with the long history of the character, there's plenty of evidence for our multiple readings.
