The irl nation; the Commonwealth Character Background: It's not clear how long Lithuania has been around, but he definitely came into being before the year 1000 AD (the first mention of his name, as 'Lietua', dates back to 1009 and mentions the border between the Litua's and Rus's lands). His history has been one of many ups and downs, though he has been rather lucky a couple of times - the Golden Horde didn't go far enough north to hurt his heartlands and its downfall was what gave him his empire, which would make him the nation with the most territory of his time. The most impressive feet about this is that he won all those vassals without a single war against one of them; in the receding strength of their lords, he made treaties and offered them protection and favourable relationships, and that was that.
Here we can also see an important thing about his personality: While he will fight when he has to and is quite good and enduring about it - being the last pagan in his area without getting invaded and occupied by Poland or the Brotherhood or other Christian forces, and later fighting the Teutonic knights and the aspiring Muscovy/Russia, wouldn't have been possible otherwise - he will try to avoid fighting if it is possible. He isn't a pacifist, or tries to be, but he believes that if there is the choice of violence or not, that the second choice is the better one. ...and he is patient enough for it. Otherwise he would have a real problem living with Poland.
Right, Poland. So after fighting everyone around him and being pagan and owning ass, something big happened in 1385: The Union of Krewo. The Polish crown had been offered to Lithuania's Grand Duke in form of a dynastic connection - Poland's child 'king' Lady Jadwiga and Jogaila, Lithuania's boss, would get married, thus connecting the two countries in a personal union that in 1569 in the union of Lublin became the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. This also meant that Jogaila had to get baptized, and while it was not a linear development and took a while, Lithuania would become and stay Catholic even through the Reformation and Soviet Union.
...yeah. So the talks that lead up to the union? Were when Lithuania and Poland met for the first time. Poland made a ...very interesting first impression on Lithuania, and the beginnings were awkward, but it didn't last long until they had become good friends and partners, and in 1410 in the battle of Žalgiris they already trusted each other with their life... And Lithuania had already started to become acquainted with Poland's quirks and laziness, but also with his cheerful and friendly yet shy nature - and for the first time in his life, Lithuania had a real friend. Canon seems to imply that he was friendly acquaintances with Poland's friend Hungary before, but up until the middle of the 19th century when the 'Baltics' became a thing, Poland would stay the only one that he really trusted and considered a true friend beyond the politics of the day. Even after the forceful break-up of the union, their relationship stayed special, which only made the feeling of betrayal that the Vilnius conflict brought worse. But in present day, so a bit less than 100 years later, they seem to have made up completely and be back to their ways from their 'married' days.
So what kind of person is someone who can live with Poland for 500 years and then willingly choose to get back with him? And why? Well, to say it plainly, because a) despite everything, he is having a great time when hanging out with Poland, probably because Poland is silly enough to balance out Lithuania's serious nature (word of god tells us that he is more serious than Germany, beat that) and b) because of feelings. It's not only that they are so close to each other and have spent so much time with each other that they are basically a part of each other, it is also that Lithuania loves Poland. And Poland told him that even if Lithuania hated him - he would not care and keep being his friend. That means a lot to the brunet. If the love is platonic or not really doesn't mean anything to Lithuania in this context - he can pretty much swing with both depending on what his rational mind and consciousness says - the important part is that Poland is his most important person and even though he is extremely worried about losing his identity to Polonization, he would never want to leave the blond. Not that it would be really possible in the political situation of 1610, where they are two nations in one country (actually they are much more multiethical than this, but the others are territories).
Mentioning territories, they of course aren't the only two people in their world. Other (APH canon) members of their household are Belarus, a young girl that Lithuania has a definite crush on (which... is not very healthy considering that she doesn't like him); Ukraine, her sister; Livonia, who will later be Latvia and Lithuania's 'little brother; Estonia, who is in shared custody with Sweden and going back and forth between the houses; and Prussia, the former Teutonic order. All of them are territories of the Commonwealth. Then Russia should be mentioned - one of the first other nations that Lithuania met, a nation that soon turned out to become too expansive and aspiring for Lithuania to stay at peace with him. Right now, the Commonwealth has occupied some vital parts of the nation, including his capital. Sweden and Saxony would be worth mentioning as occasional troublemakers (later, Saxony will join in on the personal union, at least in history, but APH canon doesn't cover that despite Saxony being canon. It is past Lithuania's point of time, though, so it should not mean any trouble.)
Lithuania's personality in short is: Friendly, serious, patient, strong, basically everything that a knight should be, and stubborn; but he also worries way too much (most of which is legit, btw, but that doesn't mean that the amounts are healthy), tends to work too much and lets Poland push (rather pull) him around a lot.
His history summed up is: Pagan, fights everyone -> grows influential, personal union with Poland, Commonwealth -> over hundred years of more or less constant catastrophes, then the partitions make him Russia's territory -> Revolutions in Russia, Baltic independences -> Vilnius conflict aka fallout with Poland, also the outsourcing where he works at America's for a while (= lots of emigration) -> WW2 makes Europe go boom and brings the Baltics back under Russia -> Independence yet again and personally getting back together with Poland
Abilites/Special Powers: Immortality (the nation kind); dealing with Poland for extended amounts of time and staying sane; forming an empire without a single occupational war; being more serious than Germany; being directly linked to his soil and people.

[Sample 1 - this is an important change to when they arrived first/compared to what happened in the game]
It had been a long day and Lithuania was exhausted. Too exhausted to even get himself proper food - he would just fall into bed and sleep like a log. But when he stepped over the doorstep to the bedroom, he stopped and frowned. Poland wasn't there yet, and the blond had left the fields prior to him to take care of the working horses. Sure, taking care of them took time, but with how much longer than expected it had taken to finish up fieldwork, he would have thought that his partner was already in bed and asleep, or waiting for him... Not like Poland staying away from him longer than necessary was a rare occurence these days. Not anymore.
Maybe it was his fault. Maybe he should have said yes - telling his best friend that he had feelings that went far beyond friendship must have been very nervewrecking for Poland. And probably still was, because Lithuania had turned him down. Had had to turn him down. After all accepting Poland's proposal - to assume that their marriage was not only international, but interpersonal - would have went against everything that church - the church, the belief that Poland had introduced to him - taught. Or at least against the part that talked about whom it was allowed and natural to bed. And while they fulfilled the "married" part... And that wasn't even everything. Because... what if getting that close would mean losing even more of himself? His nobility was already almost as Polish as Poland's; and despite them officially being equals, it was clear who was the leading power between them. He knew very well that his partner did not mean to make him feel bad, but-
The brunet groaned and sat down on the bed, staring at the door. He had never meant to hurt Poland. Sure, the blond could be thoughtless, annoying and absolutely irresponsible and unreasonable, but he still loved him dearly, considered him his best friend and the only one whom he could completely trust. They had been closer to each other than to anyone else for over two centuries now, and each year had only brought them together more. Sure, there had been fallouts and times when things had been rough, but in the end it had only made them stick together more. But now it seemed like there was an invisible wall between them. Poland hadn't mentioned anything again ever since that day almost fourty years ago, and Lithuania had never brought it up. And both of them tried to act like nothing had been said. But despite all of that, it was very clear that things had changed. Had become more awkward and...
He really hadn't wanted to hurt Poland. But there was no way that he could have said yes. For the better of both of them.
Backstory of this [Sample 2 - a sample that is not PolandPolandPolandPoland and BelarusBelarusBelarus instead]
"Good morning." The sun was still rising, but the kitchens were already bustling with activity, and the preparations for the royal wedding had everyone even more preoccupied than usually. So it wasn't really that unexpected when Belarus didn't even turn around to bark a 'Morning!' back at him with a voice that was just as lovely as ever. She really had started to grow into a beautiful woman as of lately; not that she had ever been anything but cute, but the older she got, the more obvious her natural grace became. "Can I help you with anything?"
He smiled in the hopes that she would look back at him when replying, but neither came, and after a couple of minutes he was shooed away by one of the cooks - and while he didn't yet have to return upstairs, he didn't want to be in the way. After biding her an - unanswered, which he really couldn't blame her for, after all she was busy - farewell, the brunet climbed the stairs to the court. The morning was cold, but the weather looked fine. That made him really glad - they had planned so much and he hadn't gotten enough sleep for weeks now while trying to make everything perfect (Poland hadn't been much of a help as usual, which... really, Lithuania had expected. It was frustrating sometimes, the other nation really could do more and not always watch him work, but in the end he was just unable to make him). But now it seemed like everything would turn out well. Greeting the guards as he passed by the gates, Lithuania stepped out of the castle to use the remaining hour or so before he would be needed again to mingle with the commoners outside and look after a few that he had taken up a more personal acquaintance with. Feeling for the apples in his pocket, he smiled. On a day like this, everyone should be happy, or at least as many people as possible, and all children loved apples.
First-Person Sample:
[It's been almost a day since he has seen Poland, and with so many people falling prey to the wolves in the mansion... Right now he doesn't care that Poland is avoiding him, nor does he care about the reasons for it.]
Poland. If you see this, meet me where I slipped and fell last week. [In the hopes that Poland will remember where that was, and that nobody else will know.]
To everyone else. I hope that everyone manages to stay safe and good luck to you, but under these circumstances I cannot trust anyone. ["anyone" technically includes Poland, but well. It is Poland. Unless proven wrong, Lithuania will trust him and try to keep him safe, and expect the same from his partner, even in a situation like this.] Please do not get me into a situation where I have to fight one of you; I will not hesitate to defend myself or attack if you seem to be of hurtful intent.
