You think anybody ever really changes?

[She sounds SO BITTER. She sniffles, not like she's crying but rather like she's just had the longest day of her life, everything hurts, and her nose is running. For a second, it sounds like she's about to answer her own question, but she stops herself.]

No.

[He's been thinking a lot about this lately.]

Who we are never changes. Who we think we are does.

I thought...

[There's some obvious disorientation going on before she pulls it together and says angrily:]

We might as well all pack up and go back to being dead. Once a killer, always a killer. Some things you can't fix.

Let me guess.

No matter how much you think things can change, every single time you turn a corner there's a new something. And then, when people think you've changed and something happens that drives you out of control even just for a second they automatically condemn you based on past actions.

[He's pretty much done with trying to be decent by this point though. It's a lot easier not to give a flying fuck.]

So why even bother trying?

Better to just not care.

I'm a villain, and I couldn't be a hero if I wanted. There's always something, in the back of your head, reminding you of what you are. And no matter how hard you try to be normal, the world keeps screwing you over.

It's so much easier not to care, and... Yeah, I don't care anymore.

Sure. Because you give yourself completely over to being a hero or trying to be.

[His mouth tightens] And you give more and more and people keep fucking you over. You try to be normal and accomplish things and people keep taking things away from you.

[he chuckles.] It's a hell of a lot easier. [His eyes go dark. He looks away from the camera] better not to give a damn.

...More fun too.

[Her eyes drift away from the camera, and she smiles slightly.] And yet here we are, stuck forever while some boring old fuddy-duddies try to hammer it into our heads that that just isn't true.

[Hoffman's expression turns soft. He's suddenly, almost magically, every inch the caring cop.]

...Can I ask what brought this on?

[She shrugs, an innocent look plastered across her face.] Sometimes life gives you lemons, that's all. And as it turns out, I'm not a big fan of lemonade.
