Short story

I seem to recall hearing the last line someplace before, so it is not like I'm intentionally plagarizing it. However, my search on google using several different variations of the sentence didn't turn up anything, so maybe I thought I heard it in a drug and alcohol induced state. Which, knowing me, is definately possible. Anywho, I digress....

The word stood out from the rest, unfamiliar to the child. "Maybe it's an old word for something," he thought. Carefully marking the page, he closed the book and carried it with him down the stairs. Entering the den, he walked to the overstuffed leather chair where his grandfather sat watching television. Looking over, the old man saw the book clutched in the small hands. "Ah, I remember reading that when I was your age," he said as he smiled.
"Grampa, can I ask you something?" the child asked.
"Sure, what's wrong?"
"Grampa, what are trees?"
