Cops and seat belt violations

May 21, 2007 20:13

They have all of these advertisements on the radio and television about how your local city and state officers are cracking down on seat belt violations. The entire 'Click it, or ticket' premise. Now, I don't drive wearing a seat belt. I just don't care to. I also drive fast, and get pulled over occassionally for doing so. Yet, in all the times that I've been pulled over, I've yet to receive a ticket for not wearing a safety belt.

And it isn't as though I rapidly pull it on once the blue lights start flashing. I just leave it off. The cops see that it's off, yet no ticket is forthcoming. Why? Probably because the seat belt issue just isn't as important as driving 90 in a school zone, whipping in and out of traffic, or driving without a license.

Then again, the seat belt issue isn't that important in the first place. I realize that practically EVERYONE thinks that it's more important to buckle up and have that law enforced than it is to get drug dealers off the streets, to protect citizens from identity theft, to catch murderers, or even to find the guy that stole your wallet (editor's note - that last sentence was sarcasm).

So, why not focus on putting an end to real crime? You know, like the crimes of capitalism against the working class. Or the crime of sending thousands off to die in a foreign country due to greed. Or the crime of taking away our civil liberties with the facade of protection. But, no. Seat belts. That's what is important.
