That is precisely why I choose to ask you here. I'd read more books if life wasn't always getting in the way.
I read "Ender's Game" a while back at the recommendation of Nathan and it was okay. He just made me see the movie, and it was a good representation of what I remember. I am not tempted to continue the series, which I hear gets really strange anyway.
Since I brought up movies, some recent viewings come to mind: "Interstellar" I enjoyed, "the Giver" was well done (loved the book in college), "About Time" was surprisingly touching.
I haven't kept up with the "night at the museum" movies, but they seem like fun. Like "the mixed-up files of Mrs. basil e. Frankwieler".
As for reading, I'm taking comfort in reading some oldies. "Ella minnow pea", an epistolary lipogram, and "pride and prejudice". I've read some novels a friend of mine from college wrote ("seek and hide", "found and lost"). I am very proud of her for her accomplishment. I bought Ransom Riggs' books, "miss peregrine's home for peculiar children", etc., because of his name, of course, but they are interesting, using odd (and sometimes slightly disturbing) genuine vintage photographs to tell the story. My dad challenged me to memorize "the walrus and the carpenter". So that's the third Lewis carol poem I've learned because of him. Currently I'm reading "Detroit Noir" mostly for the bits about Detroit.
I was going to say that. But you saying it makes it less sexist. (: I think it made some good points, but it isn't a world in which I'd want to live. (because I'm not a boy.)
I have read all four of them. I found out about the fourth only a couple years ago, so that was a treat. There are few modern authors I enjoy as much. --are you then familiar with the "hunger games" and "divergent" books?
Having a spouse and kids definitely expands the sort of media to which one is exposed! I think that can be good.
I love Sufjan Stevens! I don't know if you are very familiar with Michigan, but his great lakes state album captures the mystery and beauty of my home perfectly. I bring it along on every road trip. I will have to look into this new album. Thanks!
I've been away from normal modes of music lately, so mostly I've been listening to Pandora on my phone. My radio stations include Eisley, Sufjan, Owl City and his other projects, Imagine Dragons, Of Monsters and Men, Mumford & Son, etc. I'm embarrassed to say I've even developed a taste for Taylor Swift (not country).
I loved "where the red fern grows" as a kid. I'm looking forward to sharing so much with the kiddos in a couple years. Right now I'm cheating with babylit books which shorten classics into primers. Counting with "Dracula". Types of flowers with "Secret Garden". Maritime language with "Moby Dick". Nonsense poetry in "the Jabberwocky". Gotta start somewhere.
Checking out the bands you suggested now. So far so good!
About Taylor Swift: No one is perfect. I'm embracing this. (:
I'm sorry I really have nothing new to share in the music front, except that five iron frenzy has a new album out. I don't think I've outgrown them yet...
At least you have those books to look forward to. I just saw the second Divergent movie today with the other half. I enjoyed it.

Good movies to put in the queue.
Forgot The Giver had come out.
Did you ever read the other books in that series?
Night at the Museum (the first) became a fast favorite of the kids.
Who would have thunk it?
So we've kept up since.
I really have to force some things out of the way
and read more.
How about music?
I've been listening to Sufjan's new album

Read Where the Red Fern Grows with the boy this fall.
I was glad I got to do that.
Familiar with both series,
but
I haven't read them yet.
- told you it was bad - *sigh*
I think Michigan is one of his better albums.
I was tracking with you, on music,
until
you got to Taylor Swift. HA!
Check out Olivia Millerschin.
Fairly sure she's from your state.

For road trip music try Lord Huron.
I get to listen to music all day at work.
So.
There's that.
