It wasn’t cold anymore, there was even a small hint of sun coming through the small studio window, creeping over his coffee table and leaving a part of his living room with a slight bit more of light. Peter ate his cereal, making a mental note that he should buy more milk on his way back home later today, and that he should also come straight home.
He knew that being Spider-Man left him the responsibility to patrol his city, make sure citizens were alright, specially today, when every happy couple was walking around town to celebrate Valentine’s.
A few weeks ago, he would gladly claim he was part of the celebration, he’d take Carlie out to dinner, and then... well, he would come up with something. Except he got dumped.
And after he got dumped things only got worse, because above everything, he had the Parker luck.

Or lack of.

Felicia Hardy got on his way, and when he thought she was his biggest problem, or that the Universe was telling him they were meant to be, he bumped into Matt Murdock. And well, he loved Matt.
Simple as that, and even though everyone believe he was joking around, or meaning it in a non-romantic way, he wasn’t. Of course Matt knew, with all his radars and super sensitive hearing, he’d bet every time they met, he knew his pulse was accelerating. Hell, anyone good enough with the ears knew his heartbeat changed around Daredevil.
But, Matt was something completely out of his league.

First, because he was another man.
He had seen all the girls Matt was after, one prettier than the other and the bastard couldn’t even see! They all had an awesome personality, and some were kind of dangerous and messed up in the head. But, all women.

Second, yeah, there was that thing about danger being something Matt grew to love.
He wasn’t dangerous.
Peter could be funny, and annoying sometimes - hey, he knew! - but dangerous? Unless he was eing eaten by that stupid alien symbiote, then I’m sorry, no danger here.

Third, and it may sound a little too paranoid of him, but Matt had that whole connection with church and God. He would never, ever allow himself to think of Peter as anything more than a friend, a client. A low class hero, someone to team-up with when necessary, to be around when times were hard and he needed a shoulder, maybe. But feelings?
No, that was too much.

He was brushing his teeth when he was thinking all this.
Staring at the mirror, he couldn’t help but think he had grown into an okay man. He was such an ugly thing when he had fifteen, glasses that were too big for his face, his hair was never in place and girls wouldn’t give him a second look if it weren’t for Harry.
Geez, he thinking about it, he had grown into something better than anyone could’ve expected, he should even go out tonight and try to find a date. There would surely be desperate girls all around town and...

...and he just didn’t feel like it.
He actually felt like dropping by his house, to tap on his window and give him a a card in braille to just make his feelings clear once and for all.
But he could end up finding Matt and Felicia together.

He had been there once, felt that pain once and it was enough for a lifetime. His ex-girfriend and the man he loved. He shouldn’t even be surprised, worse things could happen and at least they were both happy. What was left for him to do was to step back and leave both to lead a good life.

Peter grabbed his messenger bag, his keys, and was good to go when he noticed a small envelope under his door. He took a step towards it, and turned it in his hand to see if it had a name.

“To: Parker, Peter
From: Murdock, Matthew”

Okay, he wasn’t expecting this.
The young man dropped his bag and walked back to the couch, sat down and opened the envelope. It was simple, dark red with the words written in black ink. Matt had probably asked Foggy to write it for him. Inside, there was a single piece of paper, with a card. The paper seemed to be a letter, not handwritten, but printed. Matt probably spent sometime in front of the computer, saying the words he wanted to be translated into paper.
Sighing heavily, he opened the letter.

”Good morning, Peter.
I bet right now you’re getting ready for work, already had your breakfast and is wondering if you should patrol tonight or not.
You can be too sensitive over those holidays that exist only to sell cards, flowers and chocolate. It’s just another Tuesday, Peter. Nothing’s changed and you better not think the world is giving you a break just because you feel like curling into a spidery ball and crying all day.
But, well...

What I want you to know is that you shouldn’t. You shouldn’t because you satisfy all the elements of being a great person. I wouldn’t know about the exterior, but I know you well enough to confirm to whoever wants to know you’re a reasonable person. And if you got dumped, you’re not the one at loss.
One thing you may not have realized is that you won’t ever be alone. Carlie was not the one for you, that’s just one of the reasons it didn’t work.
I know how you feel towards me.
I’ve known for a while now, but I’ve been trying to tell myself it wasn’t me your were crushing on. It just happens that after some time in denial, you get tired. I couldn’t handle this whole thing without wondering why. Why would you fall for someone like me?
And after some time I just stopped wondering and accepted your feelings, because I’ve developed feelings too.

But you know me.

You know how my life is just as much as I know yours.
I like you too much to put you in such danger, because let’s be honest: between your bad luck and how cursed I am, we wouldn’t last a month.
Peter, you have to believe me, that more than anything I would like to be with you, or at least be saying all this to your face. But it’s painful enough as it is.
I don’t think there’s much more to be said.

Just, I rule you getting upset over this to be unconstitutional.

Really, I need to hear your jokes now and then, and your laugh behind the mask. I need you to be happy. For the both of us, because you’re the only one who still stands a chance.

I love you, Peter.

Matt Murdock”

Peter folded the paper, hands shaking and eyes staring at the card he still hadn’t opened. It was a simple card, with nothing written by hand inside, just the golden ink with a simple message: “Happy Valentine’s Day”.
If that was Matt trying to make him feel better, he had failed. He didn’t even feel like getting off the couch and as he leaned down, he got a old of the phone, dialed the number to his work and called in sick.
It hurt him physically, his stomach was turning and he felt like crying during the rest of the day. Except he didn’t even have the strength to.

He re-read the letter a few times, enough to make him fall asleep, and when he woke up it was past four in the afternoon. Peter felt like going after Matt, but why would he? Was it worth trying to talk to him about this?
He didn’t think so.
The day would end, eventually. Wednesday would be just another Wednesday, he’d patrol New York like he always did, and if he happened to find Matt around he would probably make jokes, annoy the hell out of him and never mention the letter.

For now, he was too busy fighting back that warm stinging thing in his eyes and the unbearable lump in his throat.
