AAAAAHHHHHH! i'm so happy- i've found a place to live with people that actually sound really great.

so i've been freaking out a bit about housing, especially when the acquaintance from high school who i was driving to nyc to see last saturday canceled on me right before i was about to leave- i was going to look at his place and meet his roommates with the idea that i was going to sublet his room until january, which would give me time and flexibility to look for something more long term.

so i hit craigs list and sent out a shitload of emails saying i would be in the city this coming weekend- then my mom decided she couldn't go with me because she couldn't find a room in the hotel she likes and it would be tricky finding someone to watch the dogs and help jon out around the house. i decided that driving in tuesday would be better since a few people wanted to see me sooner than the weekend (people that, incidentally i did not get in touch with again).

so monday night at reading group, my mom calls and tells me that someone named heather called who sounded really great about seeing their place. their craigs list add was the best i'd seen- they described themselves as vegetarian/vegan peace and environmental activists and sounded like they might be really friendly. one of the things i was most worried about in finding housing was that i would be in a situation where i'd really have to avoid mentioning anything political around my roommates so i wouldn't have to be put on a constant, defensive, represent-the-entire-left-of-the-democratic-party position in my home space. so i'd totally been skirting the issue of politics and activism by a real quick mention to most of the people i set appointments with.

anyway, i looked at three places tuesday and then got a voicemail from heather asking if i could stp by their place that night, any time before 1 am because her partner joe was not going to be there wednesday when we'd planned to meet. so i drove over around midnight, and ended up staying and chatting until about two. they're both nice and we hit it off and the place is great. it's on the top floor of a two story building and has roof access with an excellent view of manhattan- there aren't many tall buildings around and there's a vacant green lot next door. the apartment has a nice sized kitchen that is big enough to eat in and move around in(and is painted a reddish color), and the living room is good sized too and is green with a pattern on one wall. my room is ok sized- not the biggest room i've looked at but it's also not the smallest and it has a nice closet. they are excited about having my kitten there- seriously enthusuastic, and heather is also relatively new to the city so we talked about exploring together.

my mom is not going to like the neighborhood, but i think it's great- really good graffiti everywhere and lots of smaller brick buildings and there's this feeling about the place that i really like. i'm across the street from a playground and a hasidic boys school. and it doesn't have the chic, starving hipster with trust fund feel- like, i won't have to feel bad about not owning a lot of clothing from the expensive vintage stores or the indie/nyc fashion sense.

my place is kind of between neighborhoods- i was told that we could call ourselves s.e. williamsburg, bushwick, or bed/stuy.

AND my rent is $500 a month.

they were supposed to call me last night around 11 to let me know if they wanted me, and they DIDN'T so i was like, ok, something came up and i'll call them at 9 today. i started waking up at 5:30 and looking at the clock every 20 minutes, expecting it to be later, and finally at 7 decided to stop snoozing. heather called around 7:30. so, sweetness.

they're cool with guests as long as we talk about it ahead of time- everyone else i was talking to said things like- "it' a small apartment so i prefer no more than three guests per person at a time" and "not more than two or three nights per row" and the most open "well, don't move anyone in." so now, if i have four friends who want to carpool from, oh, say syracuse and stay a week and make me happy by visiting me in my space, that's ok.

and i'm reading valley of the dolls which is totally brain candy.
