I'm rather annoyed right now. My mother and I went to see "The Help" at our local theater. It was a good movie and I had a nice time with her. This entry however is about something that happened before we went into the theater.
My mother and I walked to the ticket booth. She eventually wandered off to the side to check her phone and turn it off. There was an older man behind me. He seemed to be by himself. He asked me how did I get my Regal card, which I was holding in my hand. I told him I just asked for it and filled out some paper work. All fine, meaningless chitchat.
This is where he annoyed me.
Him: Is that your mama over there?
Me: Yes it is.
Him: I'm gonna tell you about a recent study I heard about that you should discuss with her.
Me: *confused look*
Him: It said that people who are slightly overweight live 10 years less than other people.
Me: Excuse me. *disbelief*
Him: So tell your mama that and you might get to have her around a bit longer.
Me: Thanks for the info. *proceed to ignore him when I get my tickets and get away from him as fast as possible.
My mother has struggled with her weight for most of her life. It has caused her many issues and I hate that she's unhappy with herself. But I have never met this man before in my life and WHAT GIVES HIM THE RIGHT to tell me this. My mother asked why I was upset and I told her before I thought better of it. I think that man cast a shadow over the rest of our day. She almost broke into tears before the movie and when I tried to discuss it with her hours later, she said she was trying not to think about it. But I can't stop.
My mother is not obese. She is overweight and I believe that most of it is her natural shape. But the public opinion and years of my father belittling her have told her otherwise. It has destroyed what little self confidence my mother has. And I'm sick of strangers passing judgment on my mother when she struggles with it daily. ARGH. I am so pissed off by this and I can't do anything about it.
