DC, AU- Lady Shiva is Jason Todd’s real mother.
Short prompt: Jason is really Shiva’s son. She visited him when he was young. After Catherine’s death she comes to take him with her but he refuses to leave without his friend Stephanie. She trains them both but one way or another they end up in the Batfamily.
Sandra Wu-San had only just moved to the United States (Gotham) with her sister when she met Willis Todd. He asked her out and the two began dating, all the while he was engaged to Catherine. Sandra finds out that she is pregnant and Willis dumps her. Her sister Carolyn convinces her to track down Willis and make him accept responsibility. When they finally find where he is living they meet Catherine instead. Catherine is upset to learn that her new husband has been having an affair. Sandra and her begun to talk and they eventually decided that it would be best if Catherine raises the child as her own, since Sandra lacks any funds to do so. (Willis is slapped by multiple women and Catherine finds out about his other two lovers as well). Sandra gives birth and refuses to even look at baby Jason. She and Carolyn move to Detroit in an effort to move on.
After the murder of her sister and the birth of Cassandra, she adopts the name Lady Shiva. Knowing that her daughter is lost to her she takes time to get to know her son. She visits Catherine and Jason randomly but never when Willis is around. They exchange letters and phone calls. Jason does not know that she is his mother and Catherine is kept in the dark about her job as a Professional assassin. Eventually Lady Shiva is in high demand and after Willis disappears (dead) Catherine gets involved with drugs. This causes both of them to loss track of the other without really noticing. Catherine eventually dies (either of an overdose or some ailment that the drugs didn’t help). Jason runs away from social services.
Eventually Sandra returns to Gotham after the fall of Hub City. She finds that Catherine has died and Jason is missing. Meanwhile, Jason has befriended a young Stephanie Brown. They bonded over criminal/dead beat dads and mothers with drug problems. Steph informed Jason that she plans on ruining her father’s plans if he goes back to being a criminal when he gets out of jail. Jason is inspired and convinces her that they could be vigilantes. When Steph points out that Gotham has Batman and others, Jason reminds her that Batman has bigger concerns with the big Gotham and Justice League Villians. And that many of the small time crooks are getting away while he’s busy elsewhere.
Sandra finds Jason and tells him that she is taking him with her. Jason refuses, telling her that he plans on staying in Gotham and protecting the lower class. She reveals herself to be his real mother and Lady Shiva. He is shocked but says that she can train him. She agrees but he insists that Steph has to come with them. At first Shiva says no, but after finding out more about Cluemaster and seeing her mother’s current drug addled state its decided that she would be better off with them. Thus she takes both of them from Gotham.
She trains them and brings them to many different teachers. Both learn how to kill but refuse to do so. They both insist that killing your opponent is far to easy. Breaking them is a much harder yet more rewarding exercise. During this time Batman or Nightwing catch Tim Drake following them and he is eventually tasked with becoming the second Robin. He runs across Lady Shiva and her two disciples whiles dealing with the Ghost Dragon organization. Steph has adopted the name Spoiler and Jason the name ------ (Phoenix, Crow, Hunter, Ghost, ????). Lady Shiva trains Tim for a while and Tim befriends both Steph and Jason without learning their names. Shiva calls Steph, ‘Spolier of Mine’ and Jason ‘Son of Mine’. Eventually Tim graduates with his bo staff and leaves.
After Bane breaks Batman’s back he requests Shiva’s help with retraining. She complies and brings Steph and Jason with her. When it is time to go, both decide to stay in Gotham. Tim begans to hang around with them in his Alvin Draper persona. Both Jason and Steph are using assumed names as well. At some point Spoiler takes down Cluemaster in front of Batman. Steph later reassures her mother that she is alive. Batman notices that Spoiler usually goes after repeat offenders who have families and (Jason) goes after drug pushers who sell to children (or people with kids). Both are overly violent with sex offenders.
Batman eventually confronts them over their lack of evidence gathering. He acknowledges that they do a good job but convictions fall through because they don’t bring any concrete information to prosecute with. He offers them jobs as part of his information network. Oracle also offers them a place on the Birds of Prey. Batman: Cataclysm happens and all of Gotham is devastated by the Earthquake. They spend part time in Gotham, some time with Shiva and are asked to join the Titans on some missions.
They meet Cassandra. Various other things happen. Jason assists Dick in Bludhaven. Steph and Tim begin dating.
