Friday Five

Recommend one:

1. Book
2. College/University/Personal Interest course
3. Song
4. Web Site
5. Something of your choosing (ie- author, video game, food, movie, etc)

Give a reason for each choice.

1.
I'm also so excited to recommend books, and it's often one of the books that I've read very recently that I think of. However, the first book that comes to my mind at the moment is "Ready Player One" by Ernest Cline. It's a futuristic book about a dystopian society, relationships (between friends and lovers), gaming, and the 1980s. Sounds like a strange mix, right? It is, but it's also very readable, fast-moving, and entertaining, as well as dark and funny at the same time.
I found this book at Magers & Quinn Booksellers, my favorite new & used bookstore, when the book was new in paperback. I was there to attend a reading, and the title caught my eye while I waited for the reading to start. It sucked me in within minutes, and I told myself after the reading that I would come back and buy it when I got a gift card to the store for my birthday. Within two days, I was back at the store to buy the book, it just would not leave me alone until I read it.

2.
It's been a long time since I went to college, which was a junior/community college where I studied dental assisting, a field that I only worked in for a couple of years before I admitted that it wasn't for me. I will say that there are great professors and bad ones and indifferent ones no matter what school you go to. So if you're upset because you didn't get into Harvard or MIT and went to your state university instead, you're still blessed to be able to further your education.
The best classes I took (or the ones that I enjoyed the most, maybe they're the same thing?) were literature/short stories and creative writing. The best recommendation I can give for a college course is to learn more about something you love.

3.
Beautiful, by Christina Aguilera.
Again, it's the first thing that comes to mind at the moment, but it is one of my many "favorite" songs, if nothing else because it's uplifting and picks me up when my self esteem is lower than a snake's basement, like today.

4.
Post Secret -- http://postsecret.com/ -- if you don't already know about it, check it out. Even if you do know it, check it out again. People write/design/make artwork with their own secrets and send them in to Frank Warren, who has turned secrets into this great website (updated weekly) and several books.
I enjoy reading other people's secrets and wondering what secret(s) I have and would want to send in to free myself. I also think about what people would think of me if they knew my secrets.

5.
Papa Murphy's Pizza is my favorite pizza place -- I like their toppings, and their "DeLite" crust is easily the best thin-crust pizza that I've ever eaten. All the other thin crust pizzas have always tasted like cardboard to me. And most of all, I like baking the pizza myself at home so I can make sure it's done the way I want it, with just the right amount of brown around the edges.
Besides that, it's also reasonably priced, and we always have coupons coming in the mail.
In fact, we're going to have one of their pizzas for dinner tomorrow night for national Pi day (with some kind of pie for dessert).

friday five, things that make me smile, stuff that makes me laugh
