kiwiria 1. Eggnog or Hot Chocolate?
Hot chocolate! (With lots of whipped cream, please.)
2. Does Santa wrap presents or just sit them under the tree?
All Christmas presents must be wrapped!
3. Colored lights on tree/house or white?
None, actually -- we've never put them up outside, and we haven't put up a tree the last couple of years, either. See icon for explanation of why.
4. Do you hang mistletoe?
No.
5. When do you put your decorations up?
When I get around to it, if I do -- mostly it's just setting out my snowman collection, and I STILL haven't done that. (I like Christmas, we just don't have people over, and I don't want to decorate just for me & my hubby.)
6. What is your favorite holiday dish?
Cranberry relish, when my mom makes it -- whole cranberries, chunks of apple & chunks of orange (with a little bit of orange zest) run through the food processor. YUMMY!
Otherwise, either lefse (with butter, no sugar for me, thanks) or my mom's marinated brussel sprouts.
7. Favorite holiday memory as a child?
Getting up early to check our Christmas stockins for presents! One year, Santa brought the box of *64* crayons with the sharpener in the back of the box!
8. When and how did you learn the truth about Santa?
I really don't remember -- now that I think of it, I'm not sure how much I really *believed* in Santa anyway.
9. Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve?
Absolutely! My family has dinner & opens presents on Christmas Eve every year, and then the candlelight service.
10. How do you decorate your Christmas tree?
I do have a bunch of decorations for when we bother to put up the tree, and they all have some special significance, like the red knitted bell with my name on it (and a jingle bell inside) that my great-grandma made for all of us grandkids when I was 7 or so.
11. Snow! Love it or Dread it?
Mostly love it, but dread driving on icy roads, especially with people who don't *remember* how to drive on icy roads.
12. Can you ice skate?
It's been a long time, and I doubt if my ankles are strong enough anymore, but with somebody to hold onto, I probably could.
13. Do you remember your favorite gift?
I've been lucky enough to say that I've gotten a LOT of great gifts over the years. At the moment, I'm going to mention the first two books by Jon Hassler that my grandma (Dad's mom, who also thought reading was fun) gave me when I was 11 or 12. They were probably too adult for me then, but I loved them, and ever since then, he's one of my favorite writers.
14. What's the most important thing about the holidays for you?
Music/singing with the church choir.
15. What is your favorite holiday dessert?
A cranberry/apple cobbler that I've made a few times, served with cinnamon ice cream while it's still warm.
16. What is your favorite holiday tradition?
Coming home with my husband after present opening at my mom & dad's house, just for an hour or so of "decompression" and "de-stress" time before going back to church for the candlelight service (I sing with the choir and he's our choir pianist). And then coming home again after that service, when it's totally quiet and all the neighbor's lights are out, and crawling into bed (to sleep fast before getting up for the Christmas morning service).
17. What tops your tree?
A star.
18. Which do you prefer: giving or receiving?
I'd be lying if I didn't say both.
19. Candy Canes?
I like to use them as stirring sticks in my hot chocolate!
20. Favourite Christmas movie?
The Nutcracker (the movie of the ballet as performed by the Seattle Ballet Company).
21. Saddest Christmas song?
"The Christmas Shoes" -- it's also the WORST Christmas song ever, and I turn the radio off (or go to another station) as soon as I hear it starting.
22. What is your favorite Christmas song?
"Still, Still, Still" or maybe
"Peace, Peace" or
"Joy to the World" (with the choir, so I can hear the parts).
