Top Ten Tuesday -- So many books, so little time...

Mar 01, 2011 19:43

Reading my f-list today, I heard about a great blog,
The Broke and the Bookish,

thanks to kiwiria and christina_reads

The topic of the week is "The top ten books I just had to buy but they're still sitting on my bookshelf". I can TOTALLY relate.

*points to userpic*

1. House of Leaves by Mark Z Danielewski --- I had heard about this book before, and when I saw a copy on an endcap at Borders, I grabbed it up. I keep thinking "I'll read it NEXT, but I also keep requesting other books from the library, and they show up there in *clumps*. (I'll wait a moment here while you imagine clumps of books...)

2. The Windup Girl by Paolo Bacigalupi --- I had actually never heard of this book before I saw it on display at Borders. I wrote down the title, and then managed to lose the piece of paper. I went back a couple days later just so I could write down the title again, and went home & looked it up at Amazon.com. I knew I'd have to buy it when I kept reading 5 star reviews and saying "I know, RIGHT?" and reading 1 star reviews and thinking "What do YOU know?" I went back and bought it a few days later. (What? I had a great coupon!)

3. Beside a Burning Sea by John Shors --- I had a coupon for $10 off any purchase at Borders. I'd already bought the other two books, so I was looking through the bargain bin, and for some reason, this title jumped out at me. I set it aside, and looked at other books in the bin, but I kept going back to this one and picking it up to make sure nobody else bought it. When I read the first page and a half and wanted to know what happened next, I bought it. (I also bought another discount book for my husband, and the total came to exactly $10.05. *grin*

4. Rise Again by Ben Tripp --- I have a thing for zombie novels (as you will soon see), and while browsing at my favorite Borders (which is one of the ones that's closing), I spotted this title near the horror section. I had a coupon for 33% off, and a gift card to use up.

5. The Rising by Brian Keene --- I'd heard of Brian Keene as being a writer of a good zombie series, and this book was available at BookMooch.com (free books in exchange for sending YOUR books that you no longer want, check it out!) At least I haven't bought the sequel to this book yet, I'm waiting until I read this one first.

6. Under the Dome by Stephen King --- I bought this book well over a year ago, because I *love* Stephen King and his books. And this one doesn't exactly fit the theme because I *have* started to read it. But I'm less than 100 pages in, and still haven't gone back to it.

7. A Red Herring Without Mustard by Alan Bradley --- I loved his first two 'Flavia deLuce' novels, and ordered this one in hardcover because I had more money left on the Borders gift card and Borders.com offered free shipping that weekend. This one is very near the top of my To Be Read stack.

8. Xombies by Walter Greatshell -- I bought this one at a library used book sale for a quarter. It's not even on the stack, it's on the floor by my bed, and my kittens keep kicking it under the bed. But it's still waiting to be read, and I really WANT to get to it.

9. The March by E.L. Doctorow -- My good friend little_tristan mentioned this book in a chat, and it was so intriguing... this was another free one from BookMooch, at least.

10. Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman --- I don't remember how long ago I bought this book at Magers & Quinn used bookstore in Minneapolis, but I've been wanting to get to it ever since then. I've read all but three of his novels that I have, and this is one of them. (Stardust *from BookMooch* and InterWorld *on the sale shelf of a library in Oregon* are the other two.)

And really, I could go on... You know it's bad when you wish you would get sick, just so you could stay in bed all day with a book!
