5 = Well-made, well-acted, well-directed. A classic. Probably won awards.
4 = Well-done. Above average.
3 = Typical quality. Average. Most Hollywood movies or well-made Indies fit this category.
2 = Low budget, terrible acting, or some major weak points otherwise but effort was made.
1 = Put together with hand puppets, paperclips, and chewing gum over a 3-day weekend in Mexico. They just didn't care.

This is how much I personally enjoyed the film.
OVERALL RATING
This is more of an objective rating. This is what I take into account:
- How well made is this movie? Did it win any awards? On the other end of the scope, does this look as if it was filmed by stoners in someone's backyard? At night? With a flashlight?
- What decade was this film made in? Even crappier older films tend to have more overall quality than a lot of films made post-1970. Anything that might count toward my overall rating of a more modern film that would not be available/possible/all that great in an older film (ex. special effects) is usually disregarded for an older film unless it seems lame even for an older film.
- How good is the acting? No, really, how good is the acting? Am I laughing at parts that are supposed to be dramatic?
- Is the score any good? Does it seem appropriate for the material?
- And this list makes my decision seem way more scientific than it really is...
