Kony 2012 (and repercussions)

By now I'm certain that many of you have caught notice of Invisible Children's video/campaign against Ugandan guerrilla leader Joseph Kony and his child army. He is the head of the LRA (Lord's Resistance Army) which seeks to overthrow the current Ugandan government and replace it with a theocratic government based on the 10 Commandments (Kony ( Read more... )

I agree with this post so fcking hard bb!

And Eastern Europe has so many problems like what is happening in Chechnya and even though Kosovo has been 'dealt with', it hasn't really:( It doesn't matter how people found out, the point is they now know, so make sure they get the proper fact and let's get justice moving. :)

I'm always somewhat suspicious of viral, flash-pan campaigns. I found a little about IC today, and while I support the essence of their mission, the actual organization is fishy. It's important for people to do their research, and find a reputable organization that helps the affected parties in concrete and sensitive ways.

Agreed! IC's video was good for exposure, but I hope people do more research before donating money, especially to that particular charity xD

I want to know why this is so sudden. It is nuts. I have my own feelings on the LRA and Kony, but this sudden interest. . . where did it come from? I just want to know where the hype started.

I think it might have been because of the IC video?

That's what another friend suggested, and it's probably the case. There have been other videos, though. . . part of the reason may be the year. We've seen two great dictators fall, nations change, so this may just be like "THE WORLD'S ON A ROLL! LET'S DO THIS!"

If that's the case, I'm all for it! Why not caught up in the youthful (if naive) enthusiasm for ~*~*CHANGE!~*~*~*? If people want "Revolution" by the Beatles to be the theme song of this year, I'm all for it.

What frustrates me is that I know most of these people on FB and such will not be putting in additional research into the subject or the Invisible Children organization itself. If only they put more money into the actual cause... For what it's worth, I'm glad the issue is open and out there for everyone to see, and I just hope people don't spread a misinformed view across the internet.

Exactly my sentiments. There's actually this article from the Telegraph about actual Ugandans disagreeing with the Kony video and saying it misrepresents the actual situation and incites violence. It is frustrating when something like this happens, if only because the intentions were good :/

Also, I haven't talked to you in forever! How have you been? :)
