The movie "Dagon"

Dec 23, 2008 23:15

Just finished watching this, and if you don't have a strong stomach and a taste for Lovecraft, skip it, or don't blame the nightmares on me.

It was well acted, and sufficiently unpredictable. But definitely not a date movie unless you both find Cronenberg tame.

In summary, a young couple and an older couple are on a pleasure yacht when the weather goes bad. (I think the weather can be directly blamed on sacrificing a laptop to the deep ones: "Dagon, you're getting a Dell!") They try for what looks like a nearby fishing village, somewhere on the coast of Spain. And then things start to get weird in the town of Imboca. The villagers are uncooperative at best, and murderous monsters when provoked. And not being one of them counts as provocation. Fairly standard horror stuff, done very well.

My only criticism is that it seemed a little heavy on the rain. I know that it's traditional to completely avoid sunlight once the bad stuff sets in, but they could have backed off on the rain once in a while.

Favorite inside joke: The protagonist's "Innsmouth" sweatshirt.

I'll give it 7 out of 10 tentacles. And now I know how to pronounce "Ia! Ia! Cthulhu F'thagn!" with a Spanish accent.
