Jim and I have a vacation budget of $600, my earnings from taking the minutes at the community meeting. On account of spending money buying our house, we haven't had a vacation in two and a half years. We took a staycation last year and did day trips and went up to the cabin for a few days, but no away vacations since we went to Lancaster in April 2014 when Jim retired.
This year we planned a trip to Plattsburgh. I spent $80 on advance tickets to the bluegrass festival and we reserved an Airbnb for two nights. As the date approached we decided to extend the stay and requested an additional night at the Airbnb. The original cost for the Airbnb was $112 plus $40 due on arrival for the extra night.
The day before we were supposed to leave I got very sick. The sickest I have been since I was 16 years old, sick enough to go to Urgent Care. There was no way we could go on our trip. The tickets are nonrefundable and the Airbnb we only could get back $25. When I notified the AirBnB that we had to cancel because I am very ill their first response was "Are you going to pay us the $40 you owe us for the night you haven't paid?" I already have paid them $75 for a room that I'm not using at all! What hotel has cancellation like that - NONE! And now they are upset that I didn't pay the additional $40. You got a room unused and you got $75 for it. Their second room is not even rented this weekend so it's not like they were turning people away. I wrote back and explained that I was in the ER for 7 hours and couldn't possibly come north and no response.
So we spent $168 of our vacation money and what do we have to show for it? Another $100 in ER bills. I'm so sad about it. I feel doomed.
