I guess I am kind of lucky.
I never had cats growing up (mom was allergic), but my friends did - and I always loved going over to their houses to play with their cats, but I remember the distinct "cat pee smell" throughout the house whenever I'd visit.
I have to admit, when I got my cat I was afraid my house would also smell like a litterbox. I thought it was the "norm" when you had an inside cat.
However, my cat's pee (or litterbox) or my house for that matter has never, ever smelled this way.
I don't use special fancy litters or anything. I clean the box when it's dirty, and I always scoop out litter when I see it in there (it's an uncovered pan in my bathroom -- I treat it like a second toilet) -- I am not sure why some people's houses smell like cat piss, while mine doesn't. I live in a studio apartment, so it's not as if the litterbox is so far away I can't smell anything, either.
I can't imagine that other people's litterbox habits are that bad -- I just don't know.
