Here's a question - is it actually possible to write a satisfying fixit to Journey's End?
Some people liked my last attempt, some didn't, some had reservations. Fair enough. What I did discover in the process of writing it is how very difficult it is to do justice to every character, even if you allow yourself all kinds of leeway, such as making Rose immortal, killing off the second Doctor, bringing Donna's memories safely back, and so on.
And yet it's a bone I keep worrying away at. Now I've another idea brewing - what if Donna had started to unravel at Bad Wolf Bay before they managed to leave? Or should I just let it go and move on?
I've been reading DWM 399 and I get the distinct feeling (perhaps it's just me) that the POTB underestimated (a) how much people would love Donna and (b) the strength of feeling against the way her arc ended. It's as if they thought, "Oh well, we did it with Jamie and Zoe and nobody seemed to mind", but that was an awfully long time ago and attitudes to many things, such as feminism, are very different now, as is the kind of debate and scrutiny these narrative arcs are exposed to.
If RTD was staying around, I'd say pretty confidently that Donna would be back. I was surprised that by CT's interview, how much she'd have liked to do another series, which was never presented to her as an option. Of course, Moff may have his own views, and I could understand them not wanting him to inherit a companion. And of course, nobody knows where DT will be up to come S5.
I hope one lesson that's been learned is that DW works best as a buddy narrative, not a romance. It would be absolutely exhausting to watch the Doctor fall in love again. And they have the ideal set-up for Ten and Rose in the alt!verse, both from the POV of fandom and the logistics of TV production. Who knows, we might even get a movie one day?
