The day after I brought the bunnies in, I put the two babies back in the nest and kept an eye on the yard through the day. Around dusk, I went into the guest room, the window there overlooking the veggie garden, and I saw what I thought was a rabbit about 6 feet away from the nest. I wasn't sure, thought it could be some brown plant material.
Then from the left between the garden and the house, out from under the hedge, a rather ratty looking rabbit slowly hopped out into the open. The bunny sat up on its back legs and looked around and walked on all fours to the end of the veggie garden, not hopping, but walking four legged (really strange looking on a rabbit). Bunny then hopped a ways out into the open lawn, turned around and went toward the nest, stretched into the veggie garden about body length, sniffed and withdrew, turned around and hop, nibble, ambled its way across the lawn and out of my sight.
When I turned back to the garden, I could see that the brown plants material was indeed a rabbit. I could see her eye as she'd turned around to look toward the house. As the light grew dim, I could see she had a couple of babies under her as they moved around getting the best spot for food, her holding very very still. I couldn't tell how many but I'm hoping it was more than the two from the nest. I watched til it was impossible to see and went off for dinner. I came back a few hours later and using a little LED flashlight opened the window and shone the flashlight out onto the garden. I caught the red eye lights of the rabbit still out there, a little to the right of the nest. I was a bit surprised she was still out there, but perhaps she was waiting to see if more babies came out of the brush.
The next day, there was no sign of bunnies and
sassy_fae started weeding so I could rototill at some point soon. If I don't get the veggies in soon, I won't have any. (Jenn is THE best gardening fae ever!!).
I'm going to build a brush pile near the compost heap so that if rabbits decide to nest in my garden again, they'll have some shelter from marauding cats and other wildlife.
I also still need to make the new tomato bed too. The seedlings are still in their cell packs minus the few that have already gone to their new homes.
The front garden is looking quite good now and I feel less stressed about it. There are still things to do, but if they don't get done, I'm okay with that.
The patio is weeded and I planted some nasturtium seeds yesterday. I'm going to add some sweet pea seeds, some moonflower seeds and several other vining things to climb the fence. The sweet peas and the moonflowers have been soaking over night so I'm going to go do that now.
No plans for today, so I'm going to poke away at some things that are bothering me. Force myself to poke. If I don't, I'll just go back to bed and read and sleep. I'm still quite apathetic about pretty much everything.
If I wasn't driving two other folks, I'd be skipping my nieces convocation this Thursday in Ottawa. But Teri and Nancy and I are getting in the car together on Thursday morning and driving to Ottawa for the convocation, staying the night, then turning around and coming back on Friday. Not my idea of a relaxing trip and I won't be able to stop and see my most favourite museum of ever (the Museum of Natural History), nor will I be able to do any of the touristy things I might like...ie beaver tails, copper jewellery made from the parliament building roof, shop...
Ah well.
