Life sucks sometimes.

It might not seem like a big thing to rant about but one of my son's got into the school cross country running team, the other gets to be reserve.

Lets go into their history to explain.

My boys are surviving triplets, born at 26 weeks gestation. Their sister survived 5 days. Born first, a girl and a good weight, she was given a 90% chance of survival. Son 1, weighed less was given a 30% chance, Son 2 weighing the most a 60% chance (the average for prems born at 26 weeks.

So when our daughter dies after 5 days our life was in a turmoil. The child we had greater hopes of taking home we couldn't. What hope for the other two?

Well 14 weeks later Son 2 came home, 10 days after that Son 1. Doctors could detect no obvious complications in either. Yeah it wasn't as easy as that, but that's not what this LJ is about.

Throughout Son 1's life he developed slower and had more stumbling blocks than Son 2. But we were thankful to have two children alive and free of diabilities. However by the age of 2 we knew that Son 1 had difficulties. Took us another 2 years to finally get someone to agree with us and to give us a diagnosis. And thus some help.

During assesments etc. we were told that he compensated very well and was far advanced from what the specialists expected. It helps having a brother to compete against. We were told that despite this, even with intense help Son 1 would never be good at sport. So concentrate on the speech and fine motor skills problems, so that he doesn't fall behind in school.

Now at the age of 13 and in their first year of high school both boys are in the same year and competing against each other in sports. Yes Son 1 struggles at school and needs support. He works at 110% to achieve average marks. Yes he is not as fast as Son 2 in running (a difference of 100m over 4km), but he is a better soccer player, throws a mean javelin and plays a few sports that the other doesn't even attempt.

Add to that because they were born 14 weeks early they were born in a different year to when they were due. Consequently they are competing against boys actually a year older.

So why can't he get into the cross country team just on persistence, determination and that fact he is achieving way beyond anyone's expectations?

Life sucks sometimes.

P.S. Sometimes I wish I could float a flshing neon sign above their heads informing everyone that they are achieving so much more than you think they are.
