Greetings from Tulum!

Mar 20, 2007 20:35

I'm sitting in an internet cafe in bustling downtown Tulum *wink*. This keyboard is foiling me somewhat, so I'm not going to do a full accounting of what I've been up to right now. I'm just going to say hello and assure you all that I've survived so far.

I would cut here, but I can't figure out this f*cking keyboard, so too bad! We just had a fabulous dinner at a local place in Tulum pueblo, 3 doors down from here. Delicious Enchiladas Poblanos, Sopa de Lima, and Pina Coladas. I'm very happy and slightly tipsy right now.

When we got to Tulum, we checked into a very small place called Hamaca Loca with only three tiny cabanas with palapa roofs. It's incredibly windy here right now. This was not okay for K and I. We hardly slept, so this morning the old folks decamped to a fancy place two doors down. Our current digs are in a villa once owned by Pablo Escobar. Gorgeous. Our new room is huge and lovely and QUIET. M has stayed put in Hamaca quite happily, and now peace reigns amongst us not that it was ever that bad. I just needed more quiet and K needed more light. We both needed some hot water, which was perhaps the most important thing we lacked. Now we all have what we needed.

We spent the day hanging around home away from home and being mellow. Now that evening has occurred, bringing with it some coolness, we moved inland to eat and check in with the "real world".

My Spanish is improving a little every day. By the time we leave I'll be barely able to get by. Sigh. K is an amazing Mexican driver, having learned to drive in Boston. M is working on the local tan. Between the three of us, we might eventually have one whole local person. Maybe.

Our trip has been filled with Mexican adventures so far. Highlights include a private tour of an unexcavated site near Chichen Itza, lunch in a scary roadside polleria, a giant bug in my purse, body surfing in the Caribbean, climbing all the way to the top of the highest Mayan pyramid in this area, topes topes y mas topes, as I said above staying in a drug lord's former home, taking "glamour pyramid shots" in Coba, having a guide take us birding and picking up 18 new species, using a public bathroom so beautiful I had to take a picture, swimming in a cenote underground with a single beam of sunlight shining into the pool, paying a little boy a buck to watch our car, and most of all getting to share the experience with friends.

Three more days till I go home. I plan to enjoy them. Miss you guys!
