February Update

Long time no updates! Sorry for the extended break; I hope to be getting better at communicating this year.

Big changes are afoot! J’s up in Pennsylvania at our house there, packing and purging. We have an offer on the place and if it goes through we’ll be homeless footloose and fancy free. We didn’t expect to sell the house this soon; the plan was to spend the winter in Florida and arrive in Pennsylvania with the spring to work on cleaning the house up and readying it for sale. But man proposes and God disposes, and we got an offer we could live with at the end of December.

Originally I had thought to go up with J and spend the month he’d be working on the house close enough to help out at least on the weekends. We have three cats now, and my MIL has one who doesn’t get along with ours. So one of us was going to have to stay in the RV in any case, to take care of the cats. J’s much better at clearing and packing than I am; I tend to get paralyzed by the stuff. It’s much easier for me to say, “we’ve never used that let it go,” over the phone than it is when I am actually staring at it, whatever it may be.

But our new little cat Lilibelle, who we acquired in Louisiana when she attempted to climb onto the picnic table to help herself to our dinner, had to have surgery on her foot for a persistent infection. We had that done at a great vet in Orlando, and opted to stay close to the cat hospital in case she needed any follow-up. Which she did; the infection turned out to be a rare bacteria and she was on antibiotics for a solid month. Thankfully she likes pill pockets, and her foot has healed very well. So at the end of January we settled the rig into a reasonable campground in Florida not too far from the vet, and J drove back up to PA and began the process of getting us extracted from the house there.

Here at the end of February, almost everything has been emptied out of the house (I think J has two loads to go, one to the dump and one to my MIL’s temporary apartment.) We’re down to the last couple of documents needed for closing; the county tax office is friendly and helpful but not particularly gung-ho about getting payments deposited, so I hope we have that receipt before we close and wind up paying it twice.

At the last follow-up vet visit, the doctor was very enthusiastic about how well Lilibelle’s foot had healed. It looks like once the fur grows in she should barely have a scar, which is better than any of us had thought it would be.

MIL and her cat Shawnee are getting settled in at her apartment for the winter and spring. Shawnee thinks J should just go away, since every time the cat sees him he’s disrupting things: moving things out, moving them in, locking Shawnee in a bedroom (more than once) while stuff went in and out, etc. Personally, I am ready for J to leave PA too, and that should happen this weekend. Hurray!

From here, we’ll travel west to Baton Rouge for Mardi Gras, then Texas for J’s work, then Arkansas to find a permanent apartment for MIL. In late spring we’ll make our way back to Pennsylvania to repack MIL and send her stuff to Arkansas. We’ll be in the area for a couple of weeks at least, so I am hoping to be able to meet up with local friends and get by the quilt guild meeting in May.

We’re hoping to have everyone settled and sorted out by the end of May, but there are a lot of things to do between now and then. One day at a time!
