Radio Shows

This was fun! We listened to old-time radio shows here at Radio Echoes, and wrote about them, and did a little recasting...

1. What show did you choose and why? Inspector Roderick Alleyn, Death and the Dancing Footman, because I love this series of books, have read them over and over, and it never occurred to me to look for a radio play of them!
2. What did you like about the episode? This particular story was well suited for a radio play, being a “drawing room mystery” where people are stuck in a fancy house and stuff happens, lots of standing around talking and whatnot. It turned out to be so! Very good use of the medium.
3. What did you dislike about it? I had trouble telling the characters apart, and in a murder mystery that is kind of crucial. Plus there’s a lot of exposition, of course.
4. With only this episode to go on, would you consider listening to more of the series? Sure, if only to see how they translated the books into the shorter, oral format. In this one they entered the book about halfway through, and had to recount all the backstory. Still, that part was pretty well done.
5. Does listening to this show make you want to listen to other OTR series? Sure, it was fun. They did a surprisingly good job of it.
6. Do you think the episode you listened to would something that could be translated into a series for today's audiences? Oh definitely, I imagine this series has been made into a TV series, though I’ve never seen it. But in a more modern frame? Yes, along the lines of Elementary and other procedurals….
