SynopsisJust In Time
He’s from the Past. She’s from the Future. Together they’re fighting crime in The Present.
It’s the Year 2025, and the setting is San Francisco, California, where the Federal Crime Bureau has a secret time travel tech lab run by Robert “Dr. Mac” Mackenzie (John Noble). An experimental run using live animals is interrupted by a moderate earthquake, and the resulting glitch in the systems results in the transport, to the current time, of two human beings: one from the year 2125, Alea Dhal (Megan Good) and one from the year 1925, Gun Kang (John Cho). With the time-travel machinery damaged, the Chief of the Bureau (Lili Taylor) is faced with the decision of what to do with these displaced individuals. Fortunately in a way, Dhal is a law-enforcement officer in her own time, and being from the future is conversant in time-travel. Kang is a tougher case, but as a Korean immigrant born into a rough-and-tumble community, he is quick-witted, tough, possibly with criminal tendencies. The Chief determines to make the best of the situation and use these two assets to assist her team in handling the intense crime-wave that has flourished in the society-wide chaos resulting from the 2016 presidential elections.
Casting
Alea Dhal is a police detective in 2125. Since time travel is well-established in her time, she accepted the reality of her displacement with aplomb and seems relatively comfortable with waiting out the work needed to get her back to her own time--perhaps even too comfortable, leaving her new peers to wonder if she knows more about the "accident" than she is saying. She's less comfortable with the realities of living in a more barbaric era, however, and constantly chafes at the pace of communications, the force of weaponry, and the archaic notions of the times, most especially as espoused by her new running mate, Gun Kang. Gun hails from the 20th Century, and has all the freshness, brashness, and survival skills of someone who immigrated from his home country, Korea, at the age of 5, into poverty and living on the edge. His given name, Gun, is a traditional Korean name, pronounced gune, but he found it useful in his time, as well as now, to go by the nickname of the more Americanized "Gun." He is fearless, and mentally sharp, giving him a particular appeal to his now-boss, Federal Bureau Chief Evangeline Daily. Chief Daily is a no-nonsense law enforcer at a time when chaos seems to reign, but manages to lead with fairness and a bit more warm-heartedness than you would expect. She too seems to have secrets, especially regarding her own past and rise to prominence. Meanwhile, in addition to managing her police forces, she also oversees the work of the Tech Lab, and tries not to be too impatient with the scientists and engineers that work there, especially Robert "Dr. Mac" Mackenzie. Dr. Mac is a brilliant, irascible, and sometimes charming scientist working on the cutting edge. He has to manage his time among multiple ground-breaking projects and occasionally, though reluctantly, providing analysis of actual current crimes. He is unexpectedly a bit of a ladies' man and can be quite charming when he tries. He too seems to harbor his share of secrets, both in the lab and outside of it.
