Just a typical American family--the Pritchett clan, going about their suburban lifestyles with SUVs, soccer practice, gymboree, golf, shopping, and family meals. But little do they know, their California calm is soon to be cracked--by an Evil Spirit. And what's worse--it has the ability to inhabit a different body, whenever it wants. See what happens as this spirit turns one modern family into...a MONSTER Family!
Characters and storyline
Jay Pritchett is a happy man. He has his thriving business, gorgeous wife, adorable though aggravating stepson, and his beloved though baffling son and daughter, four grandchildren, sons-in-law, and a baby on the way. Little does he know that an ordinary jaunt to the golf course will result in him being possessed by the spirit of a country-club poltergeist, who infects his personality and rides with him into the heart of his modern family.
After distressing Jay with horrible nightmares, the poltergeist jumps to his son-in-law, Phil Dunphy, and subverts his goofy good-guy persona, making him into a snarling, leather-wearing, womanizing bad-boy. This both shocks and pleases his wife, Claire, until the spirit jumps into her, making her usual straight laced disciplinarian into a messy, spontaneous character.
Next up is Claire's brother Mitchell, who goes from uptight lawyer to cosplaying clown, then to Mitch's partner Cam, who sheds his genial sensitive drama queen persona to become a malevolent, scowling drama queen.
The spirit doesn't spare the kids, making tomboy Lily into a diva, sweetheart Luke into a bully, charming Manny into a selfish grandstander.
By this time the family has figured out that something is very very wrong, but not before the spirit infects the very pregnant Gloria. Legend has it that such a spirit can be expelled from the family during the trauma of childbirth, so they hold their collective breath that this will be the outcome.
The baby is born and there is no sign of possession. The family breathes a sigh of relief and celebrates the new addition to their clan, little realizing that they might not be free of the horror that made them in to the …. Monster Family!
