That Mountain City

May 25, 2010 17:18

Baguio has turned into a 24-hour city. Back in the day, the only thing that was open 24 hours was a greasy spoon restaurant near McDonald's, some food stalls at Burnham Park, a karinderya (local fastfood restaurant) by the bus station and Dunkin' Donuts.

Rossetti and me I woke up bright and really early, before breakfast, to go to mass at Baguio Cathedral. It was a 10-15 minute walk from the hotel. We passed by the front entrance to SM City Baguio. Back during college this used to be a "shortcut" going towards Session Road. It was an empty lot where a hotel used to be before it burned to the ground.

Yes, they say that old lot was haunted. No, I never encountered any ghosts there.

Just last year this rotunda had a really ugly tree made out of concrete. It was put up by a congressman complete with his personal stamp. Now, it's Stonehenge.

That building with the PLDT sign is where I used to call home every week asking my parents for money. It used to be Piltel, and way before celphones, a collect call and ₱5 later meant Dad would send the weekly allowance the next day.

The Philippine flag Swatch watch was placed there in 1998 celebrating the country's centennial.

You could say this was Baguio on a regular mid-day -- back in 1994. But it's the morning in 2010. It'll fill up with tons of people and vehicles come noontime.

Baguio Cathedral. This is just the second time I've had mass here since first stepping foot in the city back in college.

The priest, in his sermon, started talking about the evils of the Reproductive Health bill and "een-teens siks-wal plee-syur". A few people walked out. As for us, we were too chickenshit in the eyes of God to do the same

MESSAGE!!!

On the way home we saw a billboard for Jollibee at the newly finished SM Tarlac. The happy bug looked STONED.

By the way, anyone see that Glee episode yet?

Talk about stoned, here's a fish from one of the rest stops we passed by. If any of you happen to see him, tell him I said "Hi."
