Can't decide whether to celebrate the end of Passover with the "traditional" beer & pizza or to go for beer and pad thai instead.

There's a special election in DC to fill an open at-large city council seat. There has been remarkably little information distributed about or by any of the candidates. I suppose this means that I just need to make an effort to figure out which candidate will do the least damage. Which eliminates Patrick Mara, the Republican candidate right off the bat but still leaves me with something like 8 candidates to choose from.

Submission period for the Washington Science Fiction Association Small Press Award (http://www.wsfasmallpressaward.org) closes May 1. (Rules here: http://wsfasmallpressaward.org/The_Rules.php) I submitted a story I read and really liked this year that I suspect will prove that once again my taste rarely meshes with that of other people.

That's certainly been my experience with the Hugos, although this year at least one novel, one novella, two short stories and one related work finalists were on my ballot. Makes a nice change. Was surprised that neither Notes from Coode Street or Galactic Suburbia made the ballot, but I suspect that people may have been unsure whether to place the podcasts in fanzine or best related work and that therefore nominations in both categories failed to reach the necessary threshold. Really surprised there weren't 5 short stories that reached the 5% threshold, but given the really huge amount of excellent short stories available in online venues this year (I had to winow my list of possible nominees down from 15), I could see where the voting might have been so spread out that only 4 reached the threshold or 5 did, one withdrew/declined and the next one down wasn't at 5%.
