I am taking part in a newish meme A-Z Wednesdays which is run by Vicky of
Reading At The Beach. All you have to do is go your bookshelf/bookstack and pick out a book beginning with the letter of the week.
This week’s letter is H, and so I picked Happy Ever After by Adele Geras.
Once upon a time, Megan, Alice and Bella shared the Tower Room. Theirs was an enchanted world, and the deep friendship that grew through the final year of school helped them to survive betrayal, treachery, jealousy and a terrible act of violence.
The Tower Room: Loosely based on Rapunzel, this is the story of a sudden, unexpected, passionate relationship and the unforeseen yet inevitable results of defying convention. When Megan glimpses Simon from her tower room, their worlds are changed forever.
Watching the Roses: A modern version of Sleeping Beauty, this is a haunting tale of treachery and betrayal. An ill-wishing has been placed on Alice, and it seems to be coming true.
Pictures of the Night: A retelling of the Snow White fairytale, this is a thirlling story of jealousy and enchantment. Is Bella’s stepmother really as wicked as she believes?
I love fairytale retellings, and the Egerton Hall trilogy contains three of my favourites, and Adele Geras retells three classics - Rapunzel, Sleeping Beauty and Snow White - in a 1960s English boarding school for girls. The only magic here is in Geras’s writing, but that is more than enough for these retellings.
I’ve actually
already reviewed The Tower Room, the first book in the trilogy (they can also be found as separate novels, as they were originally published) for further thoughts on the Rapunzel retelling.
