Hey Hey 16K

Some time ago I saw Rob Manuel's animation Hey Hey 16k. I love it. The words are perfect, and snapshot a sentiment seldom discussed.

Last night, I was out at a gig, and had a brief chat with a guy who was wearing a Hey Hey 16k t-shirt. I complimented him about his fashion sense, and was just about to start chatting about the animation, when the next act was announced.
I was rather surprised when the guy walked up on stage. Wired for sound acoustic guitar in hand, he proceeded to run through his set, which started in a wonderfully comic and musical vein, but with some very poignant messages behind the fun. But as I listened, the voice sounded somewhat familiar. As I looked at his t-shirt on stage, the pieces came together. He wasn't...

He was. MJ Hibbett. Third track on the set was indeed Hey Hey 16k. Whoa. What is more, the other tracks in the set were of exactly the same standard, but covering topics ranging throughout the human experience.

An album was purchased. In fact, a second one for a fellow Hey Hey 16k fan was also purchased. MJ Hibbett was great. I will be going to another performance. No question.

Turns out he lives down the road from me. In fact I gave him a lift home afterwards. A genuinely cool guy to be around, who appears to spread cheer and goodwill everywhere he goes.

In fact, he's probably the happiest DBA (Database administrator) I've ever known. Hey Hey 16k is cool, but the man behind it is cooler.
