What we have always done at my clinic is treat both cats at the same time so the chance of one (re)infecting the other one is low. I bet the vet it trying to save you money which is normally a good thing but in this case if it were my cats i would insist on treating both of them.

I would also give both of them a bath or at least go over their back end/pantaloon area with some waterless shampoo. And the litterbox - yes disinfect it with a diluted bleach solution, I think 1:32 is sufficient to kill giardia, at my clinic we always do 1:10 just to be on the safe side. Or you could just buy new boxes. Washing the bedding is good as is the hand washing. All of these things we recommend just because giardia forms a cyst after a short time being out of the body so it can survive in the environment. Its a parasite, thats its job. For sure do the cat and the litterbox at the same time so one can not reinfect the other.

This is the article we give to clients:

Sucks but with every cat I have known none of the people have gotten infected and some of them have children who are not quite as careful with sanitation ;) Yes there have been a few that have needed retreatment but again giardia is a parasite its job is to survive. Sorry, I hope that helps!
