In search of...?

Sometimes it seems like I spend my life in search of the perfect:

  • task management software (or binder, when I was into paper and pencil), to keep me on top of my work
  • system for organizing my closet or ________ (insert other space management monsters, e.g., desk)
  • piece of furniture to store things
  • briefcase: light, that will carry my computer & everything else I need while not hurting my shoulder/neck/back
  • handbag: see description for briefcase, minus the computer, but must be smaller
  • calendar system, to keep my schedule under control
  • book on organizing your life that will teach me all the secret strategies
  • ____________________ insert whatever else fits

  • Of course, the perfect ______ doesn't exist, because I'm searching for something that doesn't quite exist. While there are things/choices that can make a difference, what I've discovered over the years is that by now in my life I usually know the system or the strategies. And I know that there are always trade offs: when one says yes to one thing one is often saying no to something else. You can only fit so much in a handbag, briefcase, schedule, task list, day, life.

Instead, I need to remind myself (it seems continually these days) that the key is to make sure I'm prioritizing the important things. And accepting that there's a certain amount of manageability to most things--it's all about riding the wave, not trying to control every drop of water.
