You may have noticed that Sylvar's very, very touchy about her appearance and how people react to it. This post is here to explain why, and to request that if your character sees her, unless they really are worldly they should take notice.
Obviously she remembers none of it, but Sylvar's been dealing with xenophobia for quite a lot of her life. She grew up on Taris, which is heavily into human supremacy. Not only was she and her family poor nonhumans on a planet where that is a very, very bad thing to be, but they were Cathar. Cathar have a reputation in Star Wars for being warriors - not just warriors, but berserker warriors who fly into rages and have a lot of intense emotion pent up. It's an exaggeration and a stereotype, but it does have some basis in fact. As well, she has at some point expressed the idea that she is part of a dying or lost race. The only other Cathar she can remember meeting were her parents.
She had a very rough childhood and early adolescence, and even though circumstances improved significantly when Revan saved her and gave her the drive to go to Dantooine, the stigma of being Cathar, and her own reluctance to reach out gave her problems with connecting to humans. Revan helped with this, again, but again, that didn't cure everything.
What that means in Edensphere is that she's constantly, consistently paranoid about humans. It's nothing personal. Someone gets to know her, and she'll start to relax more around them. But when she walks down a street with a bunch of them, she becomes very on edge. She's constantly thinking that if someone decides to try pretty much anything on her, all the other humans will back him or her up. She picks ways to get places that have a lot of distance and open space between she and them. Sylvar suspects ulterior motives behind pretty much anything positive that a human, particularly a man, does or says around her.
She knows that it's not that everyone's out to get her, and she can sense this through the Force, but she also feels that some of them are, and she's afraid at a low level basically all of the time. Her Force-Sensitivity gives her an awareness of intent, but she feels that even curiosity can turn ugly very fast.
So here's how I'd like her appearance to affect you and yours.
In a sense, Sylvar falls into the
Uncanny Valley. On one side of the chasm are those catpeople who are basically human with some cat features like big ears and slit-pupiled eyes. On the other side are those catpeople who are basically anthropomorphic animals. Both would cause double-takes at the least in anyone who wasn't quite worldly, but they seem natural enough.
Sylvar, though, is somewhere in between. Right in that chasm. She's mostly humanlike, but "off" in a variety of small but visible ways that add up. The reaction someone has to her really depends on them, of course, and there will be some characters who aren't particularly interested. But I'd like for most of them to at least give her a longer look than they would if she were human. Thank you!
