Summary- One night and a bit into the morning after...
Catherine rolled over, rubbing the sleep from her weary eyes. She let her gaze fall on her friend’s peaceful, still- sleeping form next to her. Catherine’s eyes traveled the length of Sara’s body, stopping to rest on her back, which was visible through the sheer white t- shirt she’d put on sometime during the night. Catherine fingered the edge of that t- shirt now, as she slipped a cold hand beneath it and lay her palm against Sara’s warm skin. She heard Sara purr with pleasure in her slumber. Catherine snuggled down beside Sara, kissing her neck and shoulders as she did. And she wondered how something so condemned and wrong could feel so… right.
Sara awoke some time later, pushing her dark locks out of her eyes. She yawned and stretched her arm out behind her. Something felt wrong. She was alone in the bed. Confused, Sara shook her head, and rolled over.
“Boo!” Catherine’s face was immediately close to Sara’s. Sara swore and shot back; pure instinct. Catherine cracked up.
Sara glared. “Bitch.” A smile played across her lips.
“Bitch?” Catherine repeated. She held out a steaming mug of coffee. “Well, I guess I can keep this, then.”
Sara groaned. “Don’t,” she said, reaching for it.
Catherine thought about holding the coffee away from Sara to make her get out of bed, but decided against it. She handed the mug over and watched as Sara downed half of the liquid in one gulp. Sara belched loudly.
Catherine wrinkled her nose and tried not to laugh. “Attractive,” she said.
“I try,” Sara tossed her hair back and smiled.
The two women fell silent. The morning after was always awkward. Catherine knew she shouldn’t bring it up, but she needed to get something off her chest.
“Um,” she began, “About last night…”
“Let’s not,” Sara interrupted.
“It shouldn’t have happened,” Catherine said quietly.
Sara shook her head. “Like I said, let’s not go there.”
Catherine looked away. “I know, but we can’t just-”
“Pretend like it never happened?” Sara cut her off. “Yes, we can.”
“But Sara,” Catherine protested, “I thought that, you know, it meant something to you.”
“It did,” Sara replied. “And now it’s over.”
Catherine started. “What?”
“Look,” Sara began, “This can’t happen, this thing between you and I.”
“But last night you said…”
“And I meant it!” Sara cried. “But think about the outside world, here. Think about your daughter. Don’t you get it? This isn’t going to work!”
Catherine’s face was tear- streaked. “We could keep it a secret.”
“And what happens when someone finds out?” Involuntary tears were welling up in Sara’s pretty brown eyes. “I’m sorry.”
“Yeah, me too.” Catherine said. She pushed herself off of Sara’s bed. “I should go.” She turned to leave.
And Sara almost let her go. “Catherine, wait…”
“What?” Catherine replied coldly.
“I- look, there’s something I should tell you.”
Catherine turned around. “Really,” she said. It was a comment, not a question.
A lone tear ran down Sara’s flushed face. “It’s just…”
“Yes?” Catherine said anxiously…
Should I continue this? Honestly?
