My Yuletide fics! (and a bit of discussion about writing)
This year, I wrote a main assignment, and a treat, both in the same fandom, Captive Prince!
I was simultaneously terrified and thrilled to get this assignment - it was very intimidating on multiple levels. One of the things I love about Yuletide, though, is the challenge. This fandom and prompt delivered that in spades!
The recipient wanted Laurent pov, which isn't the pov the books are written in. There are a few fic already that do a wonderful job with this, and needless to say, I studied those and did a lot of thinking. Another challenge is the canon's style. Freece/Pacat has an extremely tight style, generally speaking, with forays into more detailed description. Her style is very distinct and I wanted to mirror that as much as possible. Eeek, very difficult!
I really tried to think of a shorter, smaller fic to write, but I guess I just had a lot of things I wanted to work through for this canon, and the wonderful recipient left it very open what I could do! I am not really satisfied with the story, and know it could use me going back to it in another couple of weeks with fresh eyes to tighten it up, but a lot of work went into it and it is what it is. I'm also super, super happy that I actually wrote and posted fic at ALL, because it's been a struggle for quite a while. I did reread the canon a couple or more times, and that was a joy in itself! (NEED. THIRD. BOOK. NOW.)
I found myself really debating how to warn on these fics - if anyone is wondering, there is none of the past bad stuff actually portrayed or even overtly discussed (but feel more than free to ask me, if you're interested but wary, and I'll give you specifics!)
I am EXTREMELY grateful to the people who listened along the way on my filter, and then MASSIVELY so for Idahophoenix, Lferion and Lilacsigil, who betaed and made these so much better in the process. Anyway, here's the assignment fic:
