Snowflake Challenge, Day 3! (recs in smaller fandoms, art rec)

Jan 04, 2014 11:35

Even though normally reccing other people's works is way easier for me than reccing my own (understatement), I struggled a bit on this one because the emphasis is on lesser known writers/artists and/or lesser known, smaller fandoms. Having just recced some Yuletide stories (though not as many as normal - and I'm behind on YT reading so that makes this tougher) - I am kind of ~out of smaller fandoms at the moment, or so I thought at first. But I decided to take a gander through some of the smaller-ish fandoms and/or slightly lesser known writers in my pinboard and history and brain. And I also decided, eh, I could stew about this forever, so it would be best to just pick a few things - boom - and call it done. Once I post this, I will inevitablly think of and come across millions of others, but... here we go:

Aubrey-Maturin.

Okay, so one of the small fandoms of my heart FOR ALL TIME is the Aubrey-Maturin novels. It is telling, I think, that that is how they are known even in non-fannish circles, because the friendship at the heart of the books is that significant. I love the books and the canon itself beyond measure, but of course being me I am also willing to consider a bit more sex and romance added into the canon. :D (IF SOMEHOW YOU HAVE NEVER TRIED READING ONE OF THESE, YOU REALLY REALLY SHOULD).

Since we're supposed to link to "lesser known" works/writers, I'm not going to link you to my absolute favorite fics of all time in this fandom, those by Astolat: archiveofourown.org/users/astolat/pseuds/astolat/works    (especially not Duende ahhhhhh:  archiveofourown.org/works/638694    ) or those by Toft, especially not the penguin one eeeeeee:  archiveofourown.org/works/302761 (yes, see what I did there), but instead to this wonderful writer, who I believe was pretty well known at the time, but you don't see recced as much these days. She writes Jack and Stephen with a fantastic voice and just, ahhhh, here is an au where ~for reasons, they have to stay together in a Certain Kind of Club, and the influence of all the m/m around them makes Jakes realize... well, see for yourselves:

Artist: Loobeeinthesky. S
o for a second category, I guess I will talk about some art. Now, this artist can hardly be said to be lesser known. However, if you were never in the same fandom as her, you could easily miss her work, because she is the shy and unassuming and humble types. When actually her work is AMAZING and INCREDIBLE and GIVES ME FEELS YES THEY MAKE ME SPEAK IN TUMBLR THAT'S HOW AMAZING THEY ARE. In all seriousness, there's just something about her art that speaks to me. There is one she did of Erik and Charles, with fall leaves swirling, that just knocks my breath away... gonna see if I can find it

Loobee:
On her journal, link to her art:

Les Miserables enjolras/grantaire

Okay, for a final category, hmmm. So, I don't read in Les Miserables fandom, but happened upon a description of this fic and read and LOVED it. It's not exactly lesser known, but...

June Hymn (3163 words) by The Librarina

Here's what I wrote in my Pinboard rec:  Enjolras has never experienced physical love. He doesn't want that to continue. Beautiful fic, including classical allusions that make it even sweeter and hotter.
