Yuletide Fic Reveal!
Well, reveals are up, so it's time for me to confess I wrote the following story. I only wrote one this year, but - it was very challenging for me! There were a number of "firsts" for me in writing this story, and I have to say, I'm not completely satisfied with the job I did on some of them. First explicit femslash! First Austen! First full, finished story in period voice! First polyamory (I think?)! (Edit: Just remembered... nope! Have some poly stuff in an Adam/Kris story I think lol) First het! (that's posted anywhere (I think?). There were other ways I could have gone with the prompts, but this was what happened.
My favorite things about Yuletide are the challenge - and boy did I engage in one this year - and trying to make a gift custom made for someone in fandom. The hardest thing about doing this one, I think, was trying to decide whether to include Mr. Knightley or not. The request was really interesting and awesome - the recipient's OTP is Emma/Knightley (NO PRESSURE :D), but/and was interested in exploring femslashy subtext in the novel. I had to decide whether to make a more pwp-like Emma/Jane fic, or whether to include Knightley (the prompt awesomely gave room for either). My brain sort of refused to not strive for context, and given the recipient's (and my) Emma/Knightley feelings... well, this is what happened!
In the process of doing this one, I fell in love with Jane Austen all over again for the billionth time and realized again how her work can be so deceiving - it can feel like frothy romcom, but it's really incisive social commentary and full of study of the human character. It's impossible for someone like me to fill a sentence with anything like Austen's insight and wit, but for what it's worth (oh and p.s. Mrs. Elton is probably the best character any author has ever created ever ahaha):
