Don't be a horribly harsh hater...

I have heard a lot of people knocking alliteration lately. I have read two or three articles knocking the writing device and some individuals posting about it.

I am a huge fan of juxtaposition. In college I often claimed that I sometimes just said things just to hear how they would sound together. The same is true today. If I am in a meeting or with friends and I hear a string of words that sound good together, it makes me happy. I often say that I will save those words for a future band name or trivia team name.

The other day, squidmonde brought up the idea of "object oriented comedy." Though I don't know what that would be like, I just the pictures it brings up in my head.

So alliteration to me is just another form of juxtaposition. Putting words together in a way that feel good.

Now, I will admit that I have used alliteration as a crutch before... "I don't like what I am writing so I will throw in some alliteration to gussy it up," but let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Just because it is sometimes misused does not mean that as a device it is flawed. Cars, wine and plaids are sometimes misused as well, but I don't think we should get rid of them.
