my tears turned to blood

so, things have been going a bit better these last few days. i've gotten some things accomplished and met some nice folks.

i just got back from spending a few hours at the home of Dr. Ruppert, the Director of Graduate Studies. he answered most of the remaining questions i had, and it was nice just to lounge around his house sipping on green tea with him and his wife, who are really nice. he also gave me some tips about apartments/houses. he'll also put me in touch with the other incoming grad students, in the hopes that one might also be interested in a roommate. just prior to meeting with him, i also looked a cute little house which would be great, if i can find a roommate.

i also stayed with some very kind math grad students last night, who ended up providing me with a number of leads about renting houses. on top of that, they're really nice folk as well, and one's wife works for a software company here that Liz would like to work for, so that may prove to be a valuable connection, stumbled upon quite by chance.

last night i accompanied the math grad students to a nice bar called Crane Alley for a casual evening, and tonight is the birthday festivities for one at another local bar, The Blind Pig, which is everything that (Gainesville's) Stubbie's would like to be: it's very English-Pub-esque, with a fantastic selection of beers (AND liquor, wines etc) and even a little old-timey piano, played rather well by some rocakabilly-lookin guy. (and it's not even frat guy-dominated!)

and on the car-crash tip, i should have specified that Liz is just fine. the car is history, but we'll hopefully be getting a new one shortly. even though the last few days have been looking up, i really can't wait to be back home.
