I hadn't realized 'til recently that my computer was running slow. I don't have all that much on here so I was kinda curious as to why. So, I did the control-alt-delete thing and it showed me it was running at 100%! I couldn't understand why 'cause all I do when I get on my computer is get online. I shouldn't be running at 100%. I don't know ( Read more... )

Look down at your taskbar, to the bottom right of your screen, and close any programs you're not using. Also, do a spyware check with SpyBot...you probably have some unknown things running in the background that you don't even know are there. It'll help remove them.

After you use ctrl - alt - del to pull up task manager, click on proceesses to pull up the list (no doubt quite long) of running processes. Click on CPU to order it by how much of the cpu each process is using. You should locate to offending program pretty fast. You can close that process there. It could be a perfectly normal program thats been left open for a long time (if you dont turn your computer off) and its started hogging all the cpu.

So the thing with the highest CPU number is the one I should shut down?

yes, if somethings using the majority of your cpu. The number is the percentage its using.... nothing really should be over 60% - the highest thing i see in my list is 2% (do not count system idle process)

When somethings not working right thought, it can hog the whole amount

Ok...system idle process is the only thing that's using alot of it. The rest is like 00....nothing higher than maybe 03.

Hubby says to defrag, run a virus scan - HouseCall is a good one and it's internet based. Spybot and Adaware. I asked him if this was good advice to give before I said it, and he said it never hurts so - if after all this, it's still doing it, Save all teh stuff you want saved in email or disk or something and then reinstall.
